Virginia basketball signee Melvin Whitaker has not been convicted, nor has he been released from his letter of intent, but there already is a line of programs forming to recruit him.
Scott Shepherd, who coaches the postgraduate team at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, said he has been contacted by approximately 15 college coaches with an interest in Whitaker.
``It's amazing how many people are calling to say hi all of a sudden,'' Shepherd said. ``They don't come right out and say it, but you know why they are calling.''
Shepherd coached Whitaker during the fall semester, but says he has not spoken with Whitaker since the 6-foot-10 center's arrest March 5 for malicious wounding. He knows nothing of Whitaker's - or Virginia's - plans.
``I tell them I have nothing to do with it,'' Shepherd said.
