BATES, Robert Vergil, 70, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday afternoon, March 19, 1996, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was retired from Hercules and the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. He is survived by his wife, Donna B. Bates; a son, Mark; and a daughter, Laura. BIVENS, Walter Emett, 84, of Stuart, Fla., formerly of Logan, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 19, 1996 in National Health Care Center in Stuart, Fla. He was born January 20, 1912 in Bluefield, W.Va. He was a retired sales supervisor for Appalachian Power Co. in Logan, W.Va. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Logan, W.Va., the choir for 45 years, a 32nd Degree Mason in Logan, W.Va., past president of the Kiwanis Club of Logan, W.Va., past member of the Logan County Board of Education, member of the Board of Directors for the Aracoma Story, Inc. in Logan, W.Va., Board of Directors of P.R.I.D.E., Inc. of Logan County, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Hefner Bivens; and his parents, Anthony Ernest Bivens and Stella Mae Caffee Bivens. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth (Beth) McDonald and husband, Scott McDonald, of Roanoke, Mrs. Stella Boland and her husband, Dr. Neil Boland, of Sewalls Point, Fla.; two sisters, Helen Bevins Brown of Oklahoma, Charlotte Barham of Bluefield, W.Va.; grandchildren, Andrew Scott and Anthony Scott McDonald, Neil Boland III, and Jonathan Boland. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lauren Boland. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Logan, W.Va. Friday, March 22, 1996, at 1 p.m. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, W.Va. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services. BROOKS, Jack C., 77, of Vinton, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 20, 1996. He was retired from Monarch Foods, and served in the Army during World War II. GALLIHER, William Jennings (``Willie''), 65, of Salem, went to the be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 19, 1996. He was a member of Salem Wesleyan Church and a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the U. S. Air Force. He was retired from Mason Mechanical Labs of Salem. He was a son of the late Jesse and Dessie Galliher, Ripplemead. Surviving are his wife, Jessie Mellon Galliher; one son, William Ronald Galliher, Charlotte, N. C.; two grandchildren, Michael and Stacy Galliher, Roanoke County; also surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Claude and Dorothy Galliher, Ripplemead; a sister, Velma Fisher, Christiansburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Howard Snider, Salem; a host of nieces and nephews also survive. GRUBB, Emma Mays, 99, died at Coliseum Park Nursing Home in Hampton, Va., on Wednesday, March 20, 1996. Emma was born in Grayson County, on March 29, 1896, was a resident of Grayson for 19 years, and a resident of Smyth County for 68 years. Mrs. Grubb was preceded in death by her husband, Hershal H. Grubb in 1976. She is survived by two daughters, Mary G. Cullop and her husband, Charles of Greenville, N.C., and Helen G. Vitale of Hampton ; her grandchildren, Jeanne V. Blair, Gloria V. LoMonaco, Angela Vitale, Maria V. Page, Lynda C. Lawrence, Rebecca C. Jester, and Charles P. Cullop Jr.; her great-grandchildren, Francesca LoMonaco, Lucian LoMonaco, Anthony LoMonaco, Andrew Lawrence, Peter Lawrence, Kevin Watterton, Rachael Watterton, Jacob Blair, Elizabeth Ipock, Travis Cherry, Kattie Cherry, Tommy Cullop, and Stephen Cullop; and her niece, Gladys B. Kirk of Marion, who lived with her from age 9. Emma was a long time member of Teas United Methodist Church and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church while living with her daughter Helen in Hampton for the past 11 years. Emma was a good neighbor known to her many friends. She nursed many neighbors and family through illnesses, especially the flu epidemic. She was known as a great cook and loved to prepare big dinners for anyone who came by at mealtime, She was prolific gardner, growing both vegetables and flowers. She loved to sew and make clothes for her own children and others in the community. She made many beautiful quilts and afghans which she shared with many others. Mrs. Grubb was a friend to anyone in need. Although she only had two children, she raised two of her nieces and provided a home for several others for long periods of time. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Barnett's Funeral Home in Marion. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel by the Rev. Ronald Rhodes. Burial will follow in West Cemetery.

HUFFMAN, Louise Linkous, 90, of Lakeview Drive, Dandridge, Tenn., formerly of Pulaski Co., passed away Wednesday, March 20, 1996 at Hillhaven Health Care Center. She was a member of the Hopewell Presbyterian Church, Dandridge Senior Citizens and was a retired school teac her and administrator of the Pulaski Co. School System with over 30 years of service. Survivors include daughter, Roberta L. Snedeker of Dandridge, Tenn.; granddaughter and husband, LaFern and James A. Davis of Granville, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Roberta Lori Davis and Robert Lawrence Davis. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, March 22, 1996, at 11 a.m. at Sunrise Burial Park in Radford with the Rev. Donald Scott officiating. JAMES, Lois Melville Long, 81, a long-time Roanoke resident and retired school nurse, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 1996. Mrs. James died at Maryville Nursing Home, Beaverton, Ore. She had moved to Oregon to live with her daughter, Laura Anne James Fryburg, in 1989. He passing ended an eight year struggle with lung disease. Mrs. James husband, William Robert James, a retired Roanoke County school teacher and salesman for PPG Industries, died in 1975. Mrs. James will be remembered by those who attended the many Roanoke Public Schools where she served as a nurse from 1968 until her retirement in June 1985. Mrs. James, a Registered nurse, began public health nursing in 1942. She was responsible for several immunization clinics in the 1940s and early 1950s. Mrs. James resided in the Fincastle area with her husband from 1946 until 1963, where they sponsored numerous displaced European families from World War II. She was born in Bristol, Tenn., December 31, 1914, and her family moved to Southwest Roanoke in 1918. Mrs. James graduated from Jefferson High School and Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing. She is survived by her daughter, Laura Anne; her son-in-law, Mark Fryburg, formerly of Roanoke; two step-grandchildren, Amy and Erik Fryburg. Mrs. James is also survived by two foster daughters, Barbara Bolton of Salem and Shirley Keffer of Roanoke. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 23, 1996, 1:30 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. A private burial will follow. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society, in lieu of flowers. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel from 2 until 5 p.m. Friday.

PAYNE, Mamie Elizabeth, 85, of Goodview, passed away Sunday, March 17, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie A. Payne; and a son, Willie A. Payne Jr., and just two weeks ago, a brother, Jesse Hopson. Survivors include two daughters a nd a son-in-law, Delores P. and William Davis, Moneta, and Margaret Taylor, Greenbelt, Md.; four grandchildren, Monica Taylor, Lester Taylor Jr., Marjoyrie Brooks, and Lee Davis; five great-grandchildren; an adopted son, Tirrell Bonds, Goodview; three sisters-in-law, Lottie Payne Murphy, Vinton, and Christine Menefee, Wirtz, W.Va., Elsie Jones, Baltimore, Md.; a host of other relatives and friends. ROBINSON, Edward Tuttle Jr., 77, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, March 19, 1996. Born on March 2, 1919 in Long Island, N.Y. to the late Edward Tuttle Sr. and Anna Howell Robinson. He attended VPI in 1939 and married Alease Dickerson of Blacksburg, his wife of 55 years. Stricken with multiple sclerosis in 1947, he retired from the Long Island Railroad as an engineer. After moving to Blacksburg, he served as Chairman of the Montgomery County Multiple Sclerosis Campaign. He worked for handicapped rights and was instrumental in making Blacksburg sidewalks wheelchair accessible. An avid ham radio operator, he also worked for The Hokie Flying Club as time keeper. Formally a member and financial secretary of The Methodist Church of Hempstead, N. Y., he attended First Church of God of Blacksburg. Surviving are his wife, Alease; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lynne Crumpacker, Edinburg, Va., Teresa and Andrew Murray, Huntingdon, Pa.; four grandchildren, Cynthia and spouse, Kirk Gisiner, New Market, Kristin Alease Murray and spouse, John Keller, Williamston, N.C., Daniel Edward Crumpacker, New Market, Kimberly Murray, Indianapolis, Ind.; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Randolph and Cora Dickerson, Coty and Doris Dickerson, all of Blacksburg; four nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Friday, March 22, 1996, at 7 p.m. at the Blacksburg First Church of God with the Rev. Ronald Putnam officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society and to the Blacksburg First Church of God. SPURLOCK, Alice Estelle Poindexter, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Spurlock Sr. and a daughter, Clara Ann Spurlock. She is survived by two sons, James B. (Nancy) Spurlock Jr., Richmond, and Edward L. (Betty) Spurlock, Roanoke; two daugh ters, Brenda S. (Roger) Hurt, Roanoke, and Janet S. (James) Duckett, Virginia Beach; three sisters, Sarah Wingfield, Lillian Reese, and Rachel Brown, all of Roanoke; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. TAYLOR, John Bethel, (J. B.), 47, of Salem, died Wednesday, March 20, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Melinda King; children, Chad, Chess, and Kristen; father and mother, John B. Sr. and Marie Taylor of Scottsmor, Fla.; three grandchildren; brother, Charles Ray Taylor of Smithfield, Utah; sister, Roberta Hartley of New Smyrna, Fla. TUCK, Elma Kendrick, 87, of Moneta, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 1996, in a local nursing home. She was born August 27, 1908 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Roland Turner Kendrick and Margaret Douglas Cassidy Kendrick. Her husband was the late Earl Rucker Tuck. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene and Jerry Meador, Bedford, Betty and Norris Goode, Bedford, Nancy and Donald Bryan, Buchanan; three sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence and Georgianna Tuck, Bedford, Billy and Marie Tuck, Moneta; Dr. Kenneth and Sara Tuck, Roanoke; a foster son and daughter-in-law, Flavius and Violet Cassidy, Moneta; five brothers, Leo Kendrick, Albert (Sam) Kendrick, both of Bedford, Millard Kendrick, Roanoke, Irvin (Freck) Kendrick, Russell Kendrick, both of Huddleston; five sisters, Grace Chewning, Agnes Saunders, both of Roanoke, Mamie Goode, Melva Morgan, Jane Franklin, all of Huddleston; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous other loving relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 22, 1996, at 2 p.m. from the Radford Baptist Church by the Rev. Vernon DeLong and the Rev. Tommy Floyd. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. TURNER, James Dairrell, 77, of Rocky Mount, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 1996. Surviving are his wife, Meda S. Turner of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Wesley Hudson of Rocky Mount; six sons and daughters-in-law, James and Judy Turner of Patrick Springs, Tommy and Irene Turner, Irvin and Yvonne Turner, Charles and Linda Turner, all of Rocky Mount, Daniel and Barbara Turner, Curtis and Sharon Turner, all of Ferrum; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Willie Turner, Garland Turner, both of Rocky Mount, Earl and Marie Turner of Denver, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren also survive. WIMMER, William Eugene (``Bill'') Jr., 69, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 1996. He was the former owner of Wimmer's Pancake House, and was a Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Blackwell's Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Wimmer was preceded in death by his parents, William E. Sr. and Mary Daniel Wimmer, a brother, James Harold Wimmer, and a sister-in-law, Ruth E. Wimmer. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Wimmer; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Don Work, Salem; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Nancy Wimmer, Manassas, Kyle and Faye Wimmer, Poquoson; sisters-in-law, Betty Wimmer, Salem, Betty Wimmer, Manassas; a number of nieces and nephews.
