Louis Malle film

ABINGDON - Louis Malle's last film, "Vanya on 42nd Street," will be shown at 7:30 p.m. March 26 in the Virginia Highlands Community College theater in Abingdon and at 7:30 p.m. March 27 at the Paramount Center in Bristol.

The film documents a stage production of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya," with the actors wearing street clothes and clutching take-out coffee as they gather for a run-through of the classic play. Wallace Shawn stars.

Poetry, fiction reading

ABINGDON - Virginia writer Dabney Stuart will read from his poetry and short fiction at 7:30 p.m. April 2 at Virginia Highlands Community College. The program is open to the public free of charge.

Stuart, professor of English at Washington and Lee University, has published poetry collections, a volume of stories and a critical study of Vladimir Nabokov. For a long time, he was editor of the literary journal, "Shenandoah."

His most recent publication is a new volume of poetry, "Light Years." His subjects over his 30-year writing career have included baseball and other games, geography, the movies, sideshows, history and domestic life. He has won dozens of literary prizes including the First Governor's Award for the Arts in Virginia. Further information is available by calling 628-6094.
