The public will have a chance to speak at 7 p.m. tonight on Montgomery County's proposed 6-cent increase in the real-estate tax rate. The county Board of Supervisors will hold two consecutive hearings at Auburn High School on Virginia 8 in Riner, the first on the proposed $72.7 million budget for 1996-97 and the second on the proposed tax rate of 75 cents per $100 of assessed value. The board will vote on the budget and tax rates at a later date.
What the tax proposal means:
A property owner's tax bill would increase by 8.7 percent. For instance, the tax on a home assessed at $100,000 would increase to $750 from $690 a year. Residents in Blacksburg and Christiansburg pay additional real-estate taxes to their town governments.
How Montgomery compares:
The unweighted mean tax rate - not adjusted for differences in assessment techniques between jurisdictions - for Virginia counties was .69 cents in 1995. Here's how Montgomery, with 75,600 population, compares with selected localities outside the New River Valley:
Place Rate Population
Albemarle Co. .72 71,800
Bedford Co. .44 51,200
Franklin Co. .55 42,400
Henry Co. .61 56,600
Hanover Co. .67 71,500
Rockingham Co. .66 60,900
Roanoke Co. 1.13 80,700
