THE TIPOFF

PLAYBACK: The special 20-year relationship between Bedford, its community theater and actors will be recalled through music, performances, photos and slides. "Memories," tonight and Saturday at 8, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Elks National Theatre, Bedford, has free admission. Call 586-5881.

TALL TALE: Edward Albee's 1994 Pulitzer prize-winning story of a wealthy 92-year-old widow taking stock of her life will be performed tonight through March 31 in Mill Mountain Theatre's Theatre B, Roanoke. There is some strong adult language. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday shows begin at 7:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m.; and there will be 2 p.m. matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $10 and $12. FEVER FEEDER: The Lawn, Garden and Flower Show, today through Sunday at the Salem Civic Center, might be just what's needed to cure a craving for getting out in the yard and doing spring things. Hours are 4 p.m. - 9 p.m. today; 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday; and noon - 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3, but today there is no charge if you bring aluminum cans or newspapers for recycling. TOE SHOW: Southwest Virginia Ballet will spend much time "en pointe" in a contemporary ballet by guest choreographer Juan Valqui and an earthy, ethnic ballet by artistic director Terri Post. Special guests from Lexington's Rockbridge Ballet also will perform. Shows, in Patrick Henry High School's Clara Black Auditorium, will be Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $6.50 for adults and $5 for senior citizens or children younger than 12. DEJA VIEW: Botetourt County Chorus' spring variety show, "Vaudeville's Back in Town," will be performed Saturday at 8 p.m. at James River High School. It will be back on March 29 and March 30 at 8 p.m. at Lord Botetourt High School. Tickets cost $4 for adults and $2 for children. Call 473-3029.

YOUNG VOICES: There's no cost, but you do need an admission ticket for Saturday's performance by the New England Youth Ensemble of Columbia Union College. The group has sung everywhere from California's Crystal Cathedral to New York's Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall and for dignitaries worldwide. The 7 p.m. concert will be at the Roanoke Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1701 Memorial Ave., Roanoke. Call 345-9438.

SONGWRITERS' SHOWCASE: This debut venture from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Awakenings Cafe, Roanoke, will feature original music by four area songwriters who will perform and discuss the writing process. On March 30, 7:30 - 10:30 p.m., the cafe will open its mike to musicians, poets, comedians and other entertainment aspirants. Admission to the showcase is $5; open mike night is free. Call 334-1977.

CODRESCU COMMENTS: Andrei Codrescu - commentator on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," contributor to ABC's "Nightline," Baltimore Sun columnist and occasional New York Times op-ed contributor - will speak at 8 p.m. Monday at Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Lynchburg. His topic is "Whose Woods Are These: Reflections on America." Codrescu immigrated to the United States from his native Romania in 1966 and became a U.S. citizen in 1981. BALLET BIGGIES: The Richmond Ballet will perform on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Martinsville High School Auditorium. The three contemporary dances and a neoclassical Balanchine ballet comprise the final offering of host Piedmont Arts Associations' 1995-1996 Performing Arts Series. PSALTY SKITS: Picture big walk-around characters like those in "Sesame Street Live," "Barney Live" and "Disney On Parade, set them to singing children's Christian music and performing biblically based skits and you've got Psalty & Friends.
