FERRUM WINS DOUBLEHEADER IN BASEBALL

Chris Allen and Jimmy Hamilton posted pitching victories Thursday as Ferrum swept Mount St. Mary's 6-3 and 11-4 in college baseball action in Ferrum.

Allen (1-2) struck out 11, walked two and gave up eight hits in seven innings in the first game. Riley Hodges (Franklin County) went 2-for-2 with a double, a run and a walk for the Panthers (12-3-1).

In the second game, Hamilton, working five innings in relief, struck out six, walked none and gave up three hits to improve to 5-0. Jason Wilson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for Ferrum.

Mount St. Mary's fell to 3-2.

In other news:

* Heavyweight Leslie Apedoe and 150-pound Reese Edgington of VMI won their first-round matches at the NCAA wrestling championships in Minneapolis.

Apedoe won by decision 10-5 over Pat Schuster of Edinboro and will face third-seeded Tony Vaughn of Purdue in the second round. Edgington booted Chris Bahr of Northern Iowa 6-5 and will meet fourth-seeded Charlie Becks of Ohio State.

VMI's other three qualifiers - Aaron Mickiewicz (126), Adam Mickiewicz (134) and Jason Foresman (142) - all lost in the first round.

Virginia Tech's John Dattalo (177) also lost in the first round, as did Virginia's Matt Roth (126), Jim Harshaw (150), Howie Miller (167), Craig Fenstermaker (190) and Zach Feldman (heavyweight).

* Kelly Maria's two-run double in the seventh inning tied the score at 2 and Maryland-Baltimore County scored two more runs in the eighth to win the first game as the Retrievers went on to sweep Radford 4-2 and 14-0 in a Big South softball doubleheader in Radford.

Radford (21-12, 4-4) lost the second game after UMBC (13-4, 2-2) scored five runs in the third inning to knock out Radford starter Shannon Hiltner. UMBC tacked on four more runs in the fourth to put the game away.

* Rebecca Black scored five goals to lead Tufts University past Roanoke 17-11 in a women's lacrosse game in Salem.

The Maroons (2-1) were led by Gayle Avery, who scored three goals. Four others had two goals each.

* The Moyer Softball Complex in Salem will be the site of the Radford University Invitational Tournament, scheduled today and Saturday.

The tournament includes 15 teams, four from the state: Radford, Virginia Tech, Liberty and Longwood. Play begins at 8 a.m. Friday. Tickets are $3 per day for all games or $5 for a two-day tournament pass.

* Carolyn Bucher of Roanoke finished 11th in the 400 freestyle at the Junior National swimming championships at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, Tenn. Her time of 4:23.97 qualified her for the Phillips 66 Senior National Championships on Aug.9 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
