ERVIN NETS GROUP A HONORS GUARD NAMED PLAYER OF YEAR

Stacy Ervin of Twin Springs, who made a record 12 3-pointers in one game and averaged about 30 points, is The Associated Press' Group A player of the year for Virginia.

Ervin scored 50 points in a victory against Rye Cove, including the 12 3-pointers. He made about 100 3-pointers for the season. The 6-foot-3 junior, with 1,860 career points, is expected to challenge former Laurel Park and current Old Dominion standout Odell Hodge's state boys' record of 2,530 career points next season.

Rick Goodman, who guided Council to a 19-2 record, is the Group A coach of the year. The Cobras lost only twice during the regular season, including 74-65 to highly regarded Oak Hill Academy in the Virginia High Tipoff tournament championship game on Dec.16.

Council reached the state semifinals, losing 65-61 to Madison County.

Joining Ervin on the first team are junior Doug Campbell of J.I. Burton and seniors Patrick Bartlett of Clarke County; Eric Turner of Madison County; and Shane Banks of Stuarts Draft.

Campbell, only 5-9, averaged more than 21 points, eight assists and four steals. He scored 41 points in an overtime victory against Powell Valley.

Bartlett, 6-3, averaged nearly 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists on his way to becoming Clarke County's career scoring leader. He had 26 points and 22 rebounds in a victory against Stonewall Jackson. He shot 51 percent and often did much of his scoring to rally his team in the fourth quarter.

Turner, 6-3, averaged 15.6 points and eight rebounds for Madison County, and became the first player at the school to go over the 1,000-point mark in more than 20 years. He had 28 in the Mountaineers' 74-68 overtime loss to Northumberland in the state championship game.

Banks, 6-5, averaged 22.5 points and 10 rebounds. He scored 20 or more points 15 times, including eight straight at one point during the season, and had a high of 30.

The second team is made up of Council teammates Mike Ratliff and Neil Rasnake, Jason Compton of Honaker and Jason Sartin of Coeburn, all seniors, and junior Pasquanel Bailey of Garden.

The teams were selected in balloting by sports writers and broadcasters at AP newspapers and radio and television stations across the state.
