A Ferrum woman was killed Thursday in a three-car accident on U.S. 220 in Franklin County.
Helen Nolen, 85, was a passenger in a car that turned into the path of an oncoming vehicle, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
Nolen's side of the car took the brunt of the collision, said state Trooper Tim Harris, who investigated the crash.
She was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she died shortly after the 5 p.m. wreck.
The accident happened in front of Jerry's Steakhouse near Rocky Mount. The driver of the car Nolen was in, Ruth Jones of Ferrum, was attempting to enter the restaurant parking lot and veered in front of the other car, which was traveling south on 220, Harris said. After the impact, Jones' car swerved into the parking lot and struck an unoccupied third vehicle, Harris said.
Jones, 71, and another passenger in her car, Beryl King, 76, of Rocky Mount, were not seriously injured.
The driver of the southbound vehicle, William Maxwell, 31, of Rocky Mount, also escaped serious injury.
Harris said everyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seat belt.
No charges had been filed Thursday night.
The helicopter that transported Nolen to Roanoke landed in the middle of U.S. 220 during rush hour, Harris said. Traffic was halted for 30 minutes.
