A man has been convicted of second-degree murder for ending a dispute with a driver by running him down in a shopping center parking lot.
The Albemarle County jury recommended Michael Canipe serve 10 years in prison for the death of William Knight in February 1995.
Knight and Canipe had been passing each other and then slowing down on the road before turning into the Charlottesville Fashion Square mall parking lot, witnesses said.
Canipe testified that Knight must have jumped in front of Canipe'shis car as Canipe tried to drive away.
Canipe's wife, Carolyn, told the jury Wednesday that Canipe drove straight toward Knight, who had gotten out of his car and was walking toward theirs.
``If you believe his wife, everything he's said is a lie,'' Albemarle County Commonwealth Attorney James L. Camblos said. ``He never turned to the left, he never turned to the right, he never stopped, he never put it in reverse. He just kept on going.''
Police estimated Canipe's car traveled 117 feet across the parking lot to where Knight rolled off the hood and onto the asphalt.
