FORMER RU NURSING DEAN DIES SHE `NEVER STOPPED BEING OPTIMISTIC'

Kathleen W. Green, 49, former dean of Radford University's Waldron College of Nursing and Health Services, died Thursday after a long battle with cancer.

Green was one of the highest-ranking women in the Radford administration. During the 1994-1995 school year, she served as acting vice president for academic affairs.

"I think she was the most courageous person I've ever known," said colleague Lee Stewart, a faculty member in the leisure services department.

Green arrived at Radford in 1989 after spending several years on the faculty of the State University of New York at Cortland. She earned both her master's degree and doctorate in audiology from Syracuse University.

Green retired from the dean's post at the end of the fall semester. Warren Self, associate vice president for academic enrichment, described her as a person who lived with "a real deep-seated courage."

"She just never stopped being optimistic," he said. "She would make plans for doing things a year or six months in the future, and lived as if there was a degree of certainty she was going to be there."

"She had excellent leadership skills; she was compassionate," said associate nursing Professor Karolyn Givens. "Her door was open."

The Waldron College faculty has established a scholarship in Green's name for students interested in a health care career. Donations may be made by contacting the RU Foundation at (540)381-5108.

Funeral services are pending, according to the university. Green is survived by her mother, Mildred Weppler, and her brother, Edward Weppler, both of New York City.
