VIRGINIA WARMS UP FOR LACROSSE VICTORY

When he raved about the setting for Virginia's first night lacrosse game at Klockner Stadium, coach Dom Starsia wasn't just talking about the lighting.

``I thought the scoreboard also contributed to the ambience,'' he said.

Unbeaten and top-ranked UVa took a nine-goal lead on Johns Hopkins before halftime and coasted to a 14-9 victory in temperatures that dropped into the 30s.

``Dom lied to me,'' said Cavaliers attackman Doug Knight, a junior from Katonah, N.Y. ``He told me if I came south to Virginia, I would get to play in nice weather.''

Knight scored four goals and added two assists as the Cavaliers raised their record to 5-0, with four of the wins over teams ranked in the top six. Fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins fell to 2-2.

``Once we got way up, they went to a zone, which is almost like saying you're going to lose,'' said Tim Whiteley, who had three goals and an assist, ``but, if anybody wants to play us straight up, we'll blow 'em off the field.''

Whiteley, a senior from Hunt Valley, Md., was injured in an auto accident Sunday and it was feared he might not play. He suffered a mild concussion and a bruised shoulder, and required 12 stitches.

``I was holding out on Hopkins,'' Starsia said, ``but you could tell Tuesday or Wednesday that he would tough it out. I'm sure the fact it was Hopkins had something to do with it.''

The Cavaliers led 2-2 late in the first quarter before going on a 10-1 run against the seven-time national champions. Hopkins was coming off a 14-10 victory over Syracuse.
