HIGHLANDERS BLANK BUCS IN BASEBALL

Kelly Dampeer, a former Northside High School star, went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored as Radford University blanked East Tennessee State 4-0 in a baseball game Friday in Radford.

Freshman left-hander Jamie Booth went six innings, giving up three hits and striking out five en route to the victory. The Highlanders took advantage of five East Tennessee State errors.

Patrick Muncher went 2-for-2 with three RBI, including a two-run homer as Ferrum rolled past SUNY-Utica Rome 21-3 in a baseball game in Ferrum.

David Jones also went 2-for-2 with two doubles and scored four runs for Ferrum (13-3-1). Today's game between the same teams has been moved to 11 a.m.

North Carolina State scored three times in the first inning and rolled to an 11-1 victory over Virginia Tech in a baseball game in Raleigh, N.C.

The Wolfpack (22-4), ranked 14th in the nation, roughed up Tech ace Brian Fitzgerald (2-2), starting with Jake Weber's three-run homer in the first inning.

David Fitt's fifth-inning homer accounted for the only run for the Hokies (7-9).

Freshman Laura Jewett hit a two-run homer to power Radford to a 4-1 victory over Virginia Tech in the first round of the Radford University Invitational softball tournament at the Moyer Complex in Salem.

Sheree Fletcher (12-4) scattered six hits to earn the victory for the Highlanders (23-13). Beth Drombetta doubled home the only run for Tech (4-12).

In another game, Karen Lee (Lord Botetourt) drove in four runs to help Radford beat Wagner 12-4. (Scores in Scoreboard. B4). The tournament starts today at 10 a.m.

Virginia Tech's Paula Allan took third in the shot put at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. Allan won with a throw of 43 feet, 13/4 inches.

Tech's Marshall Ferguson finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a season-best 9 minutes, 31.11 seconds.
