Spike Lee's "Girl 6" begins with a scene that's a Hollywood cliche. While she's auditioning for a film role, actress Theresa Randle is asked to take off her clothes by Quentin Tarantino, who's playing a sleazy producer-director.
Out on a publicity tour for the film, Randle admitted that the situation has happened to her. But only once:
"It was a professional kind of thing," she said. "It's so funny when people say, `That was a great reading, now could you take off your top?'
"I said `no.' I can, but I won't. See ya."
And to her, that moment is the key to the film's meaning in the way it illustrates the pressures that influence actors and their careers.
"This is what I want people to understand. I want them to feel uncomfortable. They're thinking about me as an actress portraying this character, but some actors, some thinking actors make choices for a reason. I don't want the audience to think about Theresa Randle exposing her breasts for the first time. I'm Girl 6.
"I've turned it [nudity] down because it didn't make sense to me. In this movie there was some redemption. There are a lot of people out there - adults and young adults - who will do anything to be a part of Hollywood. Hopefully, they'll understand that it's really about your integrity."
