MARION - The deadline for entries in the 1996 Sherwood Anderson Short Story Contest is June 10.
Entries will be judged in four categories: primary (grades 1-4), middle (grades 5-8), high school (grades 9-12) and adult (including college students). Awards totaling about $400 will be given to winners at a dinner program Sept. 13 in Marion. Winners will be notified in August.
Contest rules are available by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope to: Sherwood Anderson Short Story Contest, P.O. Box 1161, Marion, Va. 24354. A hardback book collecting winners from the contest's first 10 years is available for $8 at the same address. Contest sponsors are considering publication of a second book covering the second 10 years after this year's contest.
Creative writing teachers from throughout Southwest Virginia often integrate the contest into their writing curriculum. Teachers can get help in preparing units on local connections with a writer of international stature and on creative writing at the contest address.
Art group planned
An art group for children interested in exploring losses encountered through death separation, divorce, foster care or incarceration meets on Tuesday through April 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Roanoke Public Library at Elmwood Park on South Jefferson Street, Roanoke.
