Ever dream of making a whole lot of money without doing anything to earn it? If you've ever seen anyone play the lottery, you know it's possible to win big after investing a small amount of money.
Playing the stock market is a little bit like playing the lottery. In the lottery, you invest some money and hope you picked the lucky numbers. When you invest in stocks, you buy part of a company and hope the value of the company's stock increases.
Last fall, approximately 140 teams of students in grades 4-12 across Virginia invested (imaginary money, of course) in the stock market. They participated in the VA Stock Market Game, sponsored by Virginia Commonwealth University. The teams, which competed regionally and statewide, invested $100,000 in computer money in various stocks.
A team of seventh-graders from Floyd County Elementary School placed first in The Roanoke Times' region. The team, which was coached by Randy Gallimore, was treated to a pizza party by Ray's Restaurant, and to a cake donated by Slaughter's Grocery. At a School Board meeting later that day, each member of the winning team was given a $50 Savings Bond from the Bank of Floyd.
Finishing second in regional competition was a team from Bedford Middle School; a team from James Madison Middle School in Roanoke finished third.
