Chris Whiting went 3-for-5 with a solo home run to lead Radford to an 8-2 Big South Conference baseball victory Sunday over UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C.
The Highlanders (4-12, 1-2 Big South) trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning until Whiting's home run tied the score. Roanoke natives Kelly Dampeer (Northside) and Chris Carr (William Byrd) also played big roles in the win as Dampeer went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Carr was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Eric Harris pitched eight innings, scattering seven hits and two earned runs to get his first win of the season. UNC Greensboro is 14-14, 2-1.
* VMI was victimized by a seven-run, third-inning outburst that led to a 13-5 Southern Conference loss to Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C.
The loss completed a three-game sweep for the Catamounts (19-13-1, 12-3 Southern). Louie Napoleon, Chris Cofer and Nate Shepperson had three hits each for the Keydets (7-18, 3-9).
* Jimmy Hamilton allowed one hit and struck out 11 in Ferrum's 19-3 win over Emory and Henry in Emory. The Panthers (15-3-1) were led by Pat Daly's two hits and five RBI and David Jones' four hits and four RBI. Ferrum outhit the Wasps 19-1.
* Virginia Tech dropped its third straight game to 14th-ranked N.C. State, a 7-2 decision in Blacksburg. Freshman Matt Griswold hit his first collegiate home run for the Hokies (7-11) in the sixth inning to cut the Wolfpack's (24-4) lead to 5-2.
ETC. Tech's Farrell wins on Furman links
Virginia Tech's Sean Farrell fired a final round 5-under-par 67 to come from four shots behind and win the 27th annual Furman Intercollegiate golf tournament held at the par-72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
Farrell's round was highlighted by eagles on the second and 15th holes, and four birdies that gave him an 8-under-par 208. Farrell, the first Virginia Tech player ever to win the event, won by two shots over John Rollins of Virginia Commonwealth.
Virginia Tech fired a final-round 300 and moved into fifth place in the team competition in the 25-team field. East Tennessee State, the top-ranked team in the country, fired a final round 296 for a three-day total of 872 to win the team title over Ohio State at 885.
* Roanoker Jeff Wendell won his first national race this year at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.
Wendell, who drives a Dodge, competes in Class Showroom Stock C in national level races sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America that includes entrants from New Jersey to Florida.
* The Roanoke Star White under-13 soccer team won the Reston Cup held in Reston.
The Star defeated the Pittsburgh North Stars 3-0 in the championship game. The leading scorers in the tournament were Paul Hartman and Donnie Smith, who scored two goals each.
* The Brista Lightning under-14 soccer team, playing in its first tournament, won the Apple Classic in Winchester. Brista defeated the host Winchester Wizards 1-0 in the final. Dustin Greene, Shannon Prusak and Jonathan Lau anchored a defense that did not allow a goal in any of the Lightning's four tournament games. Michael Peery led the Lightning with four goals.
* Holly Saunders of Roanoke won the all-around competition at the Virginia State Gymnastics meet held in Virginia Beach.
Saunders, competing in the level nine category, was first in the uneven bars, floor exercise and vault, and finished third on the balance beam. Taryn Bianco was fourth on the uneven bars and ninth on the floor exercise, and Blacksburg's Mary Beth Umberger was sixth in the all-around competition. All three girls, along with Peggy Daffron, qualified for the regional meet next weekend in Downington, Pa.
Lauren Sisler, competing in level 10, qualified for the regional meet next weekend held in Allentown, Pa. All of the gymnasts represent the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics.
LACROSSE Roanoke tops Clarkson 14-8
Billy Metz collected three goals and an assist as Roanoke (4-1) defeated Clarkson 14-8 in men's lacrosse in Salem. The Maroons' Peter Lawrence and Jeff Jones added two goals each. Three players tallied two goals each for Clarkson (0-1).
* Tina Houck had four goals for the College of Notre Dame as it defeated Washington and Lee 9-7 in women's lacrosse in Lexington. Emily Gipson led Washington and Lee with two goals and Erika Snyder added two assists.
SOFTBALL Hokies sweep Fordham
Virginia Tech won its first two Atlantic 10 games in its inaugural season with a sweep of Fordham 7-5 and 7-4 in Blacksburg.
In the first game, Beth Drombetta went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs and Melissa Sanderson was 2-for-4 with three RBI as the Hokies (7-13, 2-0) used a four-run second inning to pull away.
Shannon Crowder led the way in the second game, going 3-for-3 with three doubles. Dawn Medina and Katie Mills each went 3-for-4 to help Jennie Kallio (2-7) get the win. Kallio went seven innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out three.
* Liz Urban went 4-for-6, hit two home runs, drove in six and scored six as Ferrum swept a doubleheader from Hartwick (N.Y.) 12-4 and 11-3 in Ferrum.
Julie Shifflett went 4-for-8 and Audra Freeman 3-for-6 in two games for the Panthers (10-9).
