Kevin Barker drove in three runs with two hits, including his sixth home run, as Virginia Tech downed North Carolina A&T 14-9 in a college baseball game Monday in Greensboro, N.C., to break a three-game losing streak.
Chad Foutz (Franklin County) also had two hits and three RBI and Matt Reynolds (William Byrd) hit a two-run triple, walked four times and scored four runs for the Hokies (8-11).
Denny Wagner allowed just one hit in eight innings for Tech. North Carolina A&T is 3-20.
In other baseball news:
* Washington and Lee jumped out to a 12-7 lead after five innings and then turned back a late Lynchburg rally to win a wild Old Dominion Athletic Conference game 16-15 in Lynchburg.
The game featured 31 runs, 39 hits and nine pitchers between the two teams. Lynchburg (5-6, 1-1 ODAC) scored five runs in the eighth inning and had runners at second and third with one out before the Generals (6-7, 2-2) turned a game-ending double play.
Tommy Esposito had four hits and three RBI for the Generals and Graig Fantuzzi and Matt Ermigiotti also drove in three runs each. Ermigiotti (3-3) got the win despite giving up nine earned runs and 16 hits.
* The baseball game between Radford and Appalachian State scheduled for Monday has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader today at 1 p.m. at Dedmon Center Park.
LACROSSE Vandy women down Tech
Vanderbilt's Susan Napolitano set a school record by scoring eight goals as the Commodores knocked off Virginia Tech 18-12 in a women's lacrosse game in Nashville, Tenn.
Vanderbilt (4-3) scored five unanswered goals in the second half to break open the game. Virginia Tech (3-3), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped, was led by freshmen Kristen Wolff, who scored four goals, and Catherine Augustyn, who had three.
* Lisa Franzino scored eight goals and had two assists to lead Roanoke to a 25-5 ODAC win over Guilford in a women's lacrosse game in Greensboro, N.C.
Franzino scored three goals in the first 1:22 of the game as the Maroons (3-1, 2-0 ODAC) built an 11-0 lead. Gayle Avery and Kirsten Wagner added four goals each for Roanoke.
Tina Beahan led Guilford (3-6, 0-3) with two goals.
Express playoff tickets go on sale
Tickets are on sale for the Roanoke Express' East Coast Hockey League playoff games at the Roanoke Civic Center. The Express begins the Riley Cup playoffs Wednesday at Charlotte at 7 p.m.
Roanoke will play Game 2 at Charlotte on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The first home game will be Game 3 on Tuesday, April 2, at 7 p.m. Game 4, if necessary, will be in Roanoke on April 4 at 7 p.m. A fifth game would be played at Charlotte on April 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for the games in Roanoke are $9.50, $8.50 and $7; $6 for senior citizens and students; and $5 for children under 12.
* VMI will host a football coaches clinic Friday and Saturday in Lexington.
The workshop will feature speakers, meals and a visit to a Keydets practice. Registration is Friday at 2 p.m., with the action beginning at 3.
High school coaches Jim Hickam (Northside), Steve Isaacs (Bath County), Billy Dee (Phoebus of Hampton) and Richard McConnell (Lee-Davis of Mechanicsville) will help lead the clinic. The entry fee is $25 and more information is available by calling 540-464-7264.
* Two Virginia Tech freshmen have qualified for the 1996 U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships for athletes 19-and-under.
Paula Allan, who throws the shot put and discus, and distance runner Stephenie Ingersoll surpassed the qualifying standards this past weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Allan, from Newark, N.Y., qualified in both the shot put and discus. She won the discus with a school-record throw of 151 feet, 7 inches. Allan now holds the Tech outdoor record in both events.
Ingersoll finished third in the 3,000-meter run. Her time of 10 minutes, 23.77 seconds beat the qualifying standard of 10:25.14.
The U.S. Junior Championships will be held June 22 at Columbus, Ohio.
* The Inner City Athletic Association will be hosting AAU West Regional Basketball Tournaments for boys' 10, 11 and 12 on the weekend of March 29-31. William Fleming, William Ruffner Middle School, and Roanoke Catholic will serve as tournament sites as 33 teams will compete in the double-elimination event. Winners advance to the State Tournament at the University of Virginia on April 18-21.
* Four members of the Blacksburg-based East Coasters-Backstreet Mountain Bike Racing team finished in the 43-cyclist Richmond Off-Road Festival on Sunday.
James Stone finished fifth, Chris Lenth 12th, Wesley Best 13th and Ashwin Amanna 15th.
