U.S. coal production rose slightly during the week ended March 16, to 21.3 million tons from 21.1 million tons the week before, the Department of Energy said Monday. The industry produced 20.7 million tons in the same week last year.
Virginia mines produced 730,000 tons in the survey week, down from 742,000 tons the previous week but up from 689,000 tons in the corresponding week last year.
Coal production so far this year is 217 million tons, 1.5 percent behind last year's pace.
