A 27-year-old man has told police he was robbed of $75 as he walked to work in Southwest Roanoke late Sunday. No one was injured.
Police said Marvin W. Hurt told them a man walked from behind a Dumpster on the 500 block of Norfolk Avenue, held his right hand in his jacket pocket as if he had a weapon and demanded money. Hurt gave the robber his wallet, which contained $75. The robber ran west on Fifth Street.
Patrol officers arrested a 32-year-old Southwest Roanoke man and charged him with trying to rob a convenience store in his neighborhood Friday night.
Police gave this account: About 6 p.m., a man walked into the Village Store at 502 Elm Ave. S.W., brandished a knife and told the clerk to call police because he was going to rob the store. The man then demanded money. Another clerk dialed 911 and the robber fled without taking anything.
One of the clerks identified a man who was walking on the street about a block from the store. Police arrested Larry Edward Donahue of the 500 block of Campbell Avenue Southwest and charged him with attempted robbery. Donahue remained in Roanoke City Jail Monday in lieu of $1,500 bond.
