ANDERSON, Alfred John, 75, of Roanoke, died Sunday, March 24, 1996. Born in Mine Hill, N. J., he was a resident of Livingston for many years until retiring to Roanoke. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. Mr. Anderson participated in the South Pacific Campaign. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Yvonne Loth Anderson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Anthony J. Parrillo, Elizabeth and Robert M. Frascella ; two sisters and brother-in-law, Eleanor Blount, Dorothy and Tevo Airola; six grandchildren, Jessica Jordan and Sarah Parrillo, Robert, Jennifer and Alexandra Frascella; many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.

BOWERS, Russell Lanier, 32, of Rt. 5, Martinsville died Sunday, March 24, 1996. He was preceded in death by his mother, Genive Ayers. Surviving are his wife, Robin W. Bowers, of the home; daughters, Penny Walker and Amber Bowers; father and step mother, Jessie L. and Mary Bowers, South Boston; brothers and sisters-in-law, Stacey and Karen Bowers, Goodview, Jessie and Brenda Bowers, Moneta, Jessie Ray and Melanie Bowers, South Boston; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Roger Stewart, Ga.; maternal grandparents, Rex and Helen Medley, New Castle; step father, Eugene Ayers, Vinton; also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. FINNEY, James Matthew, 66, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 24, 1996. He was the son of the late Zack and Agnes Austin Finney. He worked on the ship dock in New York for many years before returning home. Survivors include four sisters, Agnes Ferguson, Mabel Hayes, Alma Finney, all of Roanoke, Lucille (Roger) Brown, Washington, D.C.; one brother, Melvin Finney, Roanoke; sister-in-Law, Hazel Finney, ROanoke; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. GILBERT, Elizabeth Gardner, (``Tootsie''), 78, of Fishersville, formerly of Buena Vista, died Monday, March 25, 1996, at her home. She was born October 1, 1917 in Rockingham County, daughter of the late Charles Gardner and Annie Bowman Gardner. She was a member of the Stone Brethren Church in Buena Vista. She was retired from Quality Supermarket. She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon Gilbert Sr; and a son, Dickie Duncan Gilbert. Surviving are a daughter, Betsy Coleman of Fishersville; two sons, Weldon Gilbert Jr. of Jacksonville, N.C., and Gary William Gilbert of Staunton; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens in Lexington with the Rev. Fred Holbrook officiating. The family will receive friends and family at the home of the daughter, Betsy Coleman, on Lea Drive in Fishersville. MARSTELLER, Dudley L. Jr., 70, of Albemarle County, and formerly of Roanoke, died Sunday evening, March 24, 1996, at his home after a short illness. Mr. Marsteller was President of Marsteller Corporation, a company founded in Roanoke by his grandfather, John H. Marsteller, in 1887. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and served as radar operator aboard the troop ship J. W. McAndrew between Le Havre, Bremerhaven, and New York in World War II. He was a member of the Vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church and was on the boards of the Roanoke Fine Arts Center, the Roanoke Symphony, and the Mill Mountain Theater. He served on several advisory boards of the University of Virginia, including the Darden Business School, and many community, business, and charitable organizations in Roanoke. He is survived by his wife, Emily R. Marsteller; three sons, Dudley L. Marsteller III, H. Blair Marsteller, and Robert M. W. Marsteller; and seven grandchildren. He is survived also by a sister, Helen Marsteller Treutel of Leonia, N.J.; and a brother, John H. Marsteller of London, England. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 27, at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, Glendower. Instead of flowers memorials could be sent to St. Anne's Episcopal Parish, Glendower, of Scottsville, or to the Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville.
MARTIN, Grady, 69, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 24, 1996. He was born June 14, 1926 in Madison, Ga. He retired in 1991 from Budweiser Yeast Co. in East Brunswick, N.J. He lived in South River, N.J. before moving to Roanoke in 1991. Before joining the First Baptist Church on N. Jefferson Street, he was a member of the Union Baptist Church in South River, N.J. There he was a Trustee, Deacon, member of the Williams Willing Workers, and King of the church. Mr. Martin was also a member of King Hiram Grand Lodge #3 A.F. & A.M. of New Jersey. He is survived by his wife, Mary Martin; two sons, Grady Martin Jr. and Willie Martin, both of Jamesburg, N.J.; five daughters, Margaret Ward, New Brunswick, N.J., Donna Watson, Roanoke, Marlon Coleman, Dumfries, Michelle Martin, Old Bridge, N.J., and Debbie Jackson, Kileen, Texas; four sons-in-laws; his father, Ollie, and stepmother, Matie Martin, Madison, Ga.; five brothers, John Martin, Covington, Ga., Ollie Martin, Decatur, Ga., Willie Martin, Madison, Ga., Clinton Martin, Somerset, N.J., McArthur Martin, Madison, Ga.; four sisters, Florine Cobb, Katie Martin, Mildred Martin, and Doll Jean Martin, all of Madison, Ga.; mother-in-law, Thelma Nelson, Roanoke; seven sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; one daughter-in-law; twelve grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, noon, at First Baptist Church, N. Jefferson Street. Dr. K. B. Wright will officiate, with the interment in the Mount Olivet Methodist Church Cemetery, Boones Mill. SHIEL, Fergus O'M., Dr. 69, of Richmond, died Sunday, March 24, 1996. Dr. Shiel was the father of the late Patrick Shiell of Vinton. He is survived by his wife, Angela Shiel; three sons, Fergus, Gerald and Conor Sheil; his daughter, Dorinda Sheil. His remains rest the Bliley Funeral Home, Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and where a Christian Wake will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday. SMITH, Ruby Pearman, 86, of Richmond, formerly of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, March 23, 1996. She was married to Albert Gordon Smith, former city editor of The Roanoke World News. She was a secretary for many years at the YWCA. STANLEY, Walter Eugene, 70, of Roanoke, died Monday, March 25, 1996. He was a World War II Army veteran and received an honorable discharge and Purple Heart. He was retired from Roanoke Ice and Cold Storage. Surviving are his children, Kenneth Wayne Stanley and wife, Tami, of Greensboro, N.C., Shirley Carlisle, of the home, Barbara Carlisle and Kathy Stanley, both of Roanoke; two brothers, Roy Stanley and wife, Lillian, of Roanoke, Leonard Stanley and wife, Joyce, of Delaware; three sisters, Helen Duncan, Betty Lee Saul and Lorraine Luther and husband, Don, all of Roanoke; a special friend, Sandra Caldwell, Roanoke; also nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. WOODLIEF, Susie Van Dyke, 86, of Columbia, South Carolina, died Sunday, March 24, 1996. Mrs. Woodlief was the wife of the late R. K. Woodlief Sr. Born in Vance Co., N.C., she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Mollie Norwood Van Dyke. She was the last surviving member of nine children. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Surviving are sons, Gerald O. Woodlief, Salem, Kirk Woodlief Jr., Columbia; daughter, Sylvia Woodlief, Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Susan Williams and Lynn Williams, both of Salem, Steven Woodlief and Renee Weathersby, both of Columbia; and seven great-grandchildren. Service for Susie Van Dyke Woodlief, will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The Rosary will be recited Tuesday at 7 p.m. with visitation following at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
