LONGWOOD'S HALL NAMED TO ALL-STATE

Longwood College junior Nikki Hall was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors' College Division (II-III) All-State women's basketball first team.

Hall, a former Glenvar High School standout, averaged 16 points per game for the Lancers. Marymount junior Corrinne Carson, who averaged 19.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, was named player of the year and Randolph-Macon head coach Carroll LaHaye, who led the Yellow Jackets to a school-record 28 wins and into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament, was the coach of the year.

Randolph-Macon freshman Aimee Beightol, a former Cave Spring standout, was named to the second team, as was Kia Williams of Ferrum. Roanoke senior Marcee Hufton (William Byrd) and Virginia Union senior Marqueeta Randolph (William Fleming) were named honorable mention. (Complete teams in Scoreboard. B4)

On the men's team, Washington and Lee senior Cam Dyer was named first team after averaging 22.2 points and 7.8 rebounds. Shenandoah senior Phil Dixon (22.5 ppg, 9.6 apg) was named player of the year and Dave Robbins, who led Virginia Union to a 28-3 record and to the NCAA Division II Final Four, was the coach of the year.

Emory and Henry senior Jason Light (Floyd County), who averaged 21.2 points and 6.0 rebounds, was named to the second team. Ferrum's Michael Hunter (Alleghany) was named honorable mention.

BASEBALL Fitzgerald leads Hokies

Brian Fitzgerald pitched eight shutout innings to lead Virginia Tech to a 19-2 pasting of Appalachian State in Blacksburg.

Fitzgerald (3-2) retired 22 of 25 batters at one point and struck out nine while walking one.

Matt Reynolds (William Byrd) led Tech's 17-hit assault by going 2-for-5 with four RBI, including a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Chad Foutz (Franklin County) had three hits and five RBI, including a two-run homer in the fifth, and Kevin Barker was 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Hokies (9-11).

Appalachian State (2-2) scored both of its runs in the ninth inning. SOFTBALL Shifflett sets Ferrum HR record

Julie Shifflett broke the Ferrum College record for home runs in a career as the Panthers swept a doubleheader from Shenandoah.

Ferrum traveled to Winchester and won a Dixie Conference twinbill 17-1 and 10-3.

Shifflett hit a pair of homers in the second game, giving her 12 for her career. Shelley Bowles had the previous mark of 11. In the first game, Stacy Shelor went 4-for-5 with two triples and six RBI, and Shannon Jost was 4-for-4 with homer and five RBI to lead the Panthers (11-9 overall, 2-2 conference). Shenandoah is 0-7, 0-2.

Danielle Sekula homered in the bottom of the seventh inning in both games as UNC Greensboro swept a Big South Conference doubleheader 7-4 and 5-4 in Greensboro, N.C.

Sekula hit a two-out grand slam to win the first game after Radford (28-15, 4-6) had taken a 4-0 lead on Suzie Rath's two-run homer in the fifth.

Sekula then hit her fourth of the season - a two-run shot off Jennifer Birt - in the seventh inning of the second game to lead UNC Greensboro (14-20, 5-1). Melissa Pickel hit her 10th homer for Radford.

ETC. UVa routs Radford in lacrosse

Top-ranked Virginia scored the first 22 goals as the Cavaliers pounded Radford 23-3 in a men's lacrosse game in Charlottesville.

Doug Knight led the Cavaliers (6-0) with two goals and five assists, Michael Watson had three goals and two assists and Tim Whitely added one goal and four assists.

B.J. Forte had two goals and one assist to lead Radford (3-4).

New River Valley Speedway will conduct an open practice session for all racing divisions Saturday.

Gates will open at 10 a.m., with practice from noon to 5 p.m. The speedway will open for the season on Saturday, April 6.
