LOGGER DIES IN ACCIDENT

A Bedford County logger was killed Monday when a tree he was cutting apparently fell on top of him.

Samuel C. Nelms, 49, of Blue Ridge was cutting trees in a heavily wooded, mountainous area off Virginia 616 near Montvale when the accident happened, said Lt. John McCane of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office.

Nelms' wife and children went looking for him after he failed to pick up his daughter that night as he had said he would. Friends of the family who joined the search found Nelms' body. The logger apparently had been killed early in the day, McCane said.

Sheriff's deputies and volunteers from the Montvale Rescue Squad used one of the state Forestry Department's all-terrain military transport vehicles to reach the remote spot.
