Federal and state agencies doled out more than $10 million to counties in Western Virginia to aid in the recovery from January's flooding, the Virginia Department of Emergency Services announced this week.
About $6.5 million, mostly in federal money, went to removing debris and repairing damaged roads and bridges in 32 Virginia counties, including Roanoke, Botetourt, Bedford, Rockbridge, Pulaski and Craig, according to a news release.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency handed out another $1.5 million to nearly 1,300 people for temporary rental housing and emergency home repairs. FEMA also chipped in 75 percent of $166,000 in individual and family grants for disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. The state paid the remaining 25 percent.
Seven farmers have been approved for more than $700,000 in emergency loans. Nearly $2 million in low-interest home and business loans also have been approved through the Small Business Administration.
