Historical society

The Franklin County Historical Society will meet Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Longwood Restaurant on U.S. 220 south of Rocky Mount.

Frank Coffey, president of the Virginia Native Plant Society, will give a slide presentation .

E&H poetry reading

EMORY - E. Ethelbert Miller, director of the African American Resource Center at Howard University and visiting professor of English at Emory & Henry College, will read selections from his award-winning poetry and fiction at 7 p.m. Monday in Emory's Kelly Library.

On April 23, he will speak at E&H on "The Image of the African-American Male" at 8:15 p.m. in the Van Dyke Center.

Both presentations, during National Poetry Month, are open to the public at no charge.

Author of seven volumes of poetry, Miller is a former radio program host and frequent National Public Radio commentator.

Hospice program

Roanoke Memorial Hospital's Hospice is sponsoring a six-week series for parents who have experienced the death of a child.

The group will meet Tuesday nights beginning April 16 and continuing through May 21, 7-8:30 p.m., at the Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Virginia.

The series will provide emotional support and information about the grieving process.

Registration deadline is April 9.

Conscious quiescence

``Conscious Quiescence: The Art of Quieting the Mind,'' a course on ``whole mind'' development, will begin Tuesday and run four consecutive Tuesday nights, 7-9 p.m., at the Lifestream Center, 2028 Brandon Ave. S.W. in Roanoke.
