Construction is under way of a monument honoring all of Salem's war veterans to be placed in front of Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Salem officials plan to unveil it at a ceremony during a Salem Avalanche baseball game May 31 - Memorial Day.
The city named the stadium in honor of all local veterans.
A Georgia-based granite company is making the monument and will ship it to Salem, said Assistant City Manager Forest Jones. A committee appointed by council received bids on the monument and recommended the company.
The project will cost the city $39,000, which is part of the overall $10.1 million cost of the baseball stadium, Jones said.
The black granite monument will feature a centerpiece with insignias of each branch of the U.S. armed services.
Two side pieces will have quotations engraved in gold, Jones said.
In a related matter, Salem City Council reaffirmed Monday night its commitment of a $250,000 contribution to the planned D-Day memorial in Bedford. Council was presented with a model and conceptual drawings of the memorial by the Roanoke-based National D-Day Memorial Foundation.
Salem will pay five annual installments of $50,000 for the memorial.
Council told city staff to include the first installment in the upcoming 1996-97 fiscal year budget.
