BRIEFLY PUT ... SMART (AND STUPID) PET TRICKS

* HOW 'BOUT those dogs!

No, you haven't overlooked any canine-nicknamed sports team performing feats of wonder. We're talking about a couple of real dogs who have performed acts of amazing intelligence and, well, stupidity - which does make them so endearingly human-like.

You recall the New Hampshire setter of Irish extraction who called 911 for help when her mistress's breathing machine came unplugged. Now, a collie mix who put an idling pickup truck in gear in Ohio has led a police officer on a short chase that ended - where else? - up against a utility pole.

Our guess is that the noble mutt was trying to do everything it could to avoid having an accident.

* THAT OTHER dog story, about a pair of strays that reportedly drew rescuers to a little lost boy in the Missouri woods, is now being doubted. If it proves to be a hoax, we're confident the canines will be cleared. Dogs can be smart or dumb, but, unlike man, they've never been known to be dishonest.
