ARRINGTON, John Wayne, 53, of Redwood, passed away Thursday, March 28, 1996, after a battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Maynard Campbell. BONANNO, Antonio C., of Fredericksburg, husband of Ruth Hatcher Bonanno, died Thursday, March 28, 1996, at his home. A ""founding father"" of modern gemology, ``Tony'' Bonanno was one of America's best loved and most respected gemologists. He founded one of the country's first schools of gemology and one of the first gem testing laboratories. He was also the founder of the Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA). From 1986-1994 he was gemology editor for National Jeweler magazine, and co-authored four highly acclaimed books in the gem and jewelry field. A distinguished fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, and master gemologist appraiser of the American Society of Appraisers, Bonanno was 79 years old at the time of his death. He is also survived by six children, Anthony Bonanno of Santa Fe, N.M., Antoinette Matlins of Woodstock, Vt., Beth Rosine Honeycutt of Floyd, Kenneth Bonanno of Fredericksburg, Karen Dehaas of State College, Pa., Kathryn Bonanno of New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mayberry Funeral Home, Floyd. A graveside service will be held Monday, April 1, 1996, at 2 p.m. at Topeco Cemetery, Floyd. BROWN, Weldon Amzy, 85, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, March 27, 1996, at Montgomery Reg ional Hospital after a long illness. Dr. Brown was a history professor at Virginia Tech from 1939 until 1979, when he retired as a full professor. He was the author of several books on the American Revolution, Democracy and the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College and received his Doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Brown was born in Cycle, N.C., the son of William and Sarah Allred Brown. He was preceded in death by his nine brothers and sisters; and by his wife, El Rita Wachs Brown. He is survived by his son, Dr. James E. Brown, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Patricia P. Brown of Middlefield, Conn. He is also survived by two grandchildren, James E. Brown Jr. and Rebecca Mary Brown, both of Philadelphia, Pa. Funeral services will be private. There will be no calling hours. CATRON, James H., (``Jim''), 61, of Wytheville, died this morning, Friday, March 29, 1996, at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Catron, Wytheville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Bill Jones, Wytheville, Donna Gay and John Stone, Wytheville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary and Kathy Catron, Wytheville, Tim Catron, Wytheville; his mother, Emma Umberger, Wytheville; one sisters, Lena Faye Crockett, Speedwell, one brother, William F. ``Buster'' Catron, Wytheville; three grandsons, Trey and Jamie Jones, and Travis Catron Baker. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the West End United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Smith and the Rev. Marvin Howard. The interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. The remains will be placed in the church one hour before service time. CHURCH, Cornelius, (``Nick''), 76, of 140 Race Blvd., Marion, died Thursday, March 28, 1996 in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Church was a native of Smyth County, and a veteran of the U. S. Army. He retired from the Marion Bottling and Pepsi Company, having worked there for over 45 years. Survivors are his wife, Hester Church, Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Susan Church, Marion; granddaughter, Amy Church, Marion. Also surviving are a host of other relatives. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Barnett's Marion Funeral Home with the Rev. David Neitch officiating. EATON, Emily Miller, 91 of Pearisburg died Thursday March 28,1996 following a long illness. Miss Eaton was a retired school teacher in Giles County with over 45 years of service. She was a graduate of Radford College and was a member of the Staffordsville Christian Church, joining the church at an early age and was baptized in Walkers Creek. She then moved her membership to the Pearisburg First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She was born in Giles County on Dec 10,1904 and was a daughter of the late William P. Eaton and Roxie Starritt Eaton. She is survived by one sister, Annie E. Munsey of Pearisburg; a host nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 31,1996 at 3 p.m. in the. SKIPPER, Hobert, of Roanoke, formerly of Bay Shore, N.Y., died March 26, 1996. He was the beloved husband of Mary Elizabeth, loving father of Larry and Gary, cherished grandfather of 4. Mr. Skipper was born in Gastonia, N.C. September 17, 1925. He attended North Carolina State University and served in the Navy as a Radio Man Third Class during World War II. He operated the ticker tape machine on Wall Street, N.Y. while working for Wall Street Journal. He was a printer with Newsday in N.Y. for over 30 years. Interment will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 1, at Blue Ri dge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke.
SMITH, Marjorie G., 83, of Natural Bridge, passed away Wednesday evening, March 27, 1996. Mrs. Smith was born March 14, 1913 in Lignite, Botetourt County, and was a daughter of the late James Lewis Taylor and Mary Margaret Bowers Taylor. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Natural Bridge before moving to Texas in 1990. She was a member and former Sunday School teacher at the Natural Bridge Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her church work, her crochet pieces, and her African Violets. Surviving are her daughter, Linda Lee Plumley; and her son, Gary Wayne Smith; six grandchildren, Alvin Plumley, Terry Dame, Gary Wayne Smith Jr., Cassandra Plumley, Kristina Plumley, and John Clayton Plumley; one sister-in-law, Edra Smith. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton E. Smith. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 1996, at the Harrison Funeral Chapel, which was built by her late husband. The Rev. Donald Stine will officiate.
