THE MARTINSVILLE Speedway president plans to run in Late Model races at New River Valley Speedway during the summer.
It's not enough for Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell to run a track. He needs to race on one, too.
Campbell, 36, formally announced Friday his plans to run most of the season's Late Model Stock Car races at New River Valley Speedway.
``This is more or less my golf game,'' Campbell said on the eve of the unveiling of his car at the Taco Bell on Hershberger Road in Roanoke.
The restaurant chain and Fox 21/27 will sponsor Campbell's passion, which is running a bit stronger now than in years past. During the past five years, he's run some Limited Sportsman and a few Late Model races.
This year, in addition to a regular Late Model schedule, Campbell is running in the Legacy series, a 5/8-scale Winston Cup car series. He led the first 13 laps in the season-opener at Florence (S.C.) Motor Speedway on March 23.
``I'm in the business and naturally it's something I love, but by no means do I want to get on that side of the fence'' as a profession, Campbell said.
``But we'll run all during the summer - not quite a full season. We'll run most of them all at New River and maybe a couple at South Boston. It's during the time when I'm not tied up so heavily at the speedway. This is a hobby for me and I'm just out there to have fun with it.''
