Charlotte Smith, the Christiansburg High School choral director, picked the music for this week's concert in September.
It was not until Smith heard 400 children raise their voices with song that she felt the music seemed to have been picked for Angie Knowles.
Knowles died of a shotgun wound March 20 leaving four children, her mother, brother and a mass of dedicated friends. Her estranged husband has been charged with murder in connection with her death.
An offering made at the concert raised $1,500 for the Knowles children; one more link in a chain of fund-raising events to which the community has responded enthusiastically.
``There wasn't an empty seat in the house,'' Smith said.
From the start people have seen the need for financial help for Angie Knowles' four children. And from the beginning they have said the need will not subside for years to come.
Fred Newhouse, vice president and branch administrator of First National Bank where an account for the Knowleses was set up, said he would like to see enough money collected so that college funds could be created. He has already been approached by a group of people working on a letter to collect money annually.
More immediate fund raisers include the Christiansburg Interfaith Choir and Orchestra concert to be held tomorrow at the Christiansburg High School. Smith said the school waived its rental fee to free up any money collected for the Knowles family. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.
John-Michael Knowles' fraternity at James Madison University - Alpha Kappa Lambda - has opened an account of its own for donations.
Ryan Powers, fraternity brother, said the proceeds from Greek Sing on Thursday went to the fund as well as money from other campus organizations.
Locally, donations still can be sent to the "Fund for the Children of Angie Knowles," P.O. Box 600, Christiansburg, Va., 24073.
