Two Roanoke Valley Governor's School students advanced to the International Science Fair after winning grand awards in the Western Virginia Regional Science Fair held Saturday at Hollins College.
Seth Wood, a senior at Northside High School, won a grand award for his project "A Higher Place: The Effect of Biomechanics on Running Efficiency." Annie Eure, a junior at Patrick Henry High School, won for her project "The Phytoremediative Effect of Brassica Rapa on Heavy Metal Contaminated Soil."
The two students, who competed against more than 80 other local science fair winners, will receive $3,000-a-year scholarships to Roanoke College, free tuition to Virginia Western Community College, and a trip to the international competition in Tucson, Ariz., May 4-11.
Two alternate grand award winners were announced: Abigail Ferrance, a Patrick Henry sophomore, for her project "The Effect of Harvesting on Constructed Wetland Treatment Systems''; and Taharee Webb, a senior at Patrick Henry, for "The Effect of Passive Smoke on the Respiratory Health of Children, Phase II.'' The alternates won $1,500 scholarships to Roanoke College.
"The caliber of this year's projects was outstanding," said David Partington, director of the regional science fair. "The fact that all four winners are from the Roanoke Valley is exemplary of what we're doing here in terms of science education.''
