TERRAPINS KNOCK OFF CAVALIERS

Maryland upset top-ranked Virginia 13-11 in a men's Atlantic Coast Conference lacrosse game in College Park, Md., on Saturday.

Terrapin All-America goalie Brian Dougherty recorded 27 saves. Sophomore Andrew Whipple scored six goals for the fifth-ranked Terps (6-1 overall, 2-1 ACC). Doug Knight scored three goals for the Cavaliers (6-1, 0-1).

In other lacrosse:

* Roanoke's Alli Oglesby scored with 18 seconds left in the game to give the seventh-ranked Maroons a 12-11 victory over eighth-ranked Hartwick in a women's game in Salem.

Oglesby scored three goals and two assists for the Maroons (4-1). Hartwick (2-2) led 6-1 after one quarter and held the advantage until Roanoke's Kirsten Wagner scored with 2:24 left to give the Maroons an 11-10 lead. Hartwick added another goal before Oglesby gave Roanoke the victory.

* Sophomore B.J. Forte scored five goals and junior Corey Finley added four more to lead Radford (1-6) to a 17-12 men's victory over St.Joseph's (4-4) at the Dedmon Center in Radford.

* Jeremy Nierman scored his fifth goal with 26 seconds left in overtime to lift seventh-ranked Franklin and Marshall (4-2) over sixth-ranked Washington and Lee 10-9 in a non-conference men's game in Lancaster, Pa.

* Mount St.Mary's outscored VMI 5-0 in the first quarter, then held on for a 13-11 win in a non-conference men's game in Emmitsburg, Md. Joe Brockman and John Ripley scored three goals each for the Keydets (3-3).

* Sarah Dacey and Erin McGinnis each tallied four goals as North Carolina (8-1) routed the Virginia Tech's women's team 19-4 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Suzy Funston had a goal and an assist for the Hokies (3-4).

* Washington and Lee senior Cinnie Logan netted four goals and Brooke Glenn made 19 saves to become W&L's career saves leader in helping the Generals (6-2) to a 12-8 women's victory over Mary Washington (6-1) in Lexington.

BASEBALL Tech splits doubleheader

Virginia Tech and Xavier split a doubleheader at English Field in Blacksburg in the first-ever Atlantic 10 Conference baseball games for both schools.

The Musketeers (11-13, 1-1) won the first game 6-5 on the strength of a four-hit, five-RBI performance by Sean West. The Hokies (11-12,1-1) took the nightcap 5-2 as pitcher Sean Hummel (3-3) held Xavier to five hits.

* Liberty took both games of a Big South Conference doubleheader with Radford (7-16, 2-4) in Lynchburg.

The Flames (14-8, 4-2) routed the Highlanders 8-2 in the first game and won the nightcap 4-3.

ETC. Hokies shine in football scrimmage

Several Virginia Tech players had outstanding performances in a controlled football scrimmage.

Jim Druckenmiller completed four of five passes for 51 yards and Marcus Parker ran for 34 yards on eight carries from his tailback position. On defense, Tony Morrison had six tackles and a sack and Myron Newsome and Chris Cyrus had six tackles each. Cornell Brown added five tackles.

* Washington and Lee senior Josephine Schaeffer set two meet records in the Mary Washington College Battleground Relays in Fredericksburg.

Schaeffer won the 5,000 meters with a time of 17 minutes, 46.4 seconds and the 3,000 meters in 10:12.2. The Generals also won the women's distance medley relay, completing the race in 13:08.9.

In the men's competition, Roanoke's Courtney Fitch set a meet record in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 10 inches and won the long jump with a jump of 22 feet, 9 inches.

* Ben Amonette of Radford is one of four finalists for two spots on the U.S. air pistol team for the Summer Olympics. Amonette shot a score of 672.4 to rank fourth in competition in Atlanta.

Army Sgt. Daryl L. Szarenski led the way with a 680.5 total and was followed by Neil Caloia (677.5) and Gregory Derr (673.2). They will shoot off to pick the two-man team during the North American Shooting Championships on April 14-17 at the Olympic shooting venue in Atlanta.

* The Roanoke Junior Express dropped an 8-4 decision to the New Jersey Thunderbirds in the Tier Three Regionals in Hillsborough, N.C.

Dan Morgan led the Express with three goals and one assist as Roanoke outshot New Jersey 23-22. Roanoke will play its final game against the Florida Panthers today.
