This week the Muslim Student Association of Virginia Tech will present panel discussions, a movie and an art exhibit for Islamic Awareness Week.
The association says its goal is to dispel myths and offer an opportunity for students and others to get a clear picture of Islam.
"An opportunity to think" is the motto for the week and its activities.
"We would like to present Islam not only as a religion but a whole way of life," says Ra'id S. Awadallah.
Events planned for this week include:
Today: Panel discussion: "Islam: A Way of Life"; 7 p.m., Colonial Hall in Squires Student Center; panel members: William Ochsenwald and Ali H. Nayfeh, both Virginia Tech faculty members; Yahya Al-Hindi, Islamic Center of Charlotte, N.C.; Mona Hasstuneh, a doctoral student at Tech.
Wednesday: Panel discussion: "Islam and Christianity;" 7 p.m. in Haymarket Theater in Squires; panel members: Al-Hindi of the Islamic Center of Charlotte, N.C.; David Burr; a Tech faculty member.
Thursday: Movie: "Choosing Islam;" 7 p.m. in Haymarket Theater. The movie contains interviews with people who have converted to Islam.
Friday: Art and poster exhibit: Short talks about Islamic art and movie presentations; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Old Dominion Hall in Squires. People will be available to answer questions. Food from different parts of the Islamic world will be offered to the audience.
