This is National Public Health Week, and New River Valley health officials are urging residents to learn how to prevent illness or injury. Statistics show that people take more responsibility for their health when they know how to protect it.
Local health officials have adopted the theme of "Celebrating Success" during the week to mark their recent success in distributing health information.
Fast facts about Virginia health:
* About 22 percent of Virginians have been told their blood pressure is high.
* Almost 75 percent of Virginians do not smoke.
* Of those Virginians who do not have health insurance, 24 percent have not had health insurance for more than five years.
