CHASE ENDS IN ACCIDENT: DWI CHARGED

A 27-year-old Blacksburg man was arrested and charged with drunken driving Saturday after a chase that ended on Merrimac Road.

Blacksburg police arrested Derwin E. Stafford after a chase that began on Hightop Road in Blacksburg and reached speeds of more than 60 mph. The pursuit ended when the car left the left side of Merrimac Road in Montgomery County, rolling over once on a small embankment and landing on its wheels, according to police.

Two of the four people in the car suffered injuries. A 29-year-old Blacksburg woman was treated for a fractured neck and leg contusions and released, according to police.

Stafford, the driver, was arrested for driving under the influence, attempt to elude police and driving with a suspended license after having been convicted for drunken driving. He was taken to Blacksburg jail after telling police he was not injured. Later he requested medical treatment and was taken to Columbia Montgomery Regional Hospital where he was treated for a broken wrist.

Stafford was freed on a $5,000 bond Sunday.

The remaining passengers, Thomas L. Roop, 23, of Blacksburg, and Patricia Shepherd, 23, of Christiansburg, were uninjured. Both were charged with public intoxication.
