SOMETHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT

The late Bedford County newspaperman and amateur historian Kenneth Crouch left behind a large collection of autographs and letters.

Here are excerpts from correspondence to him:

* When Crouch requested the autograph of the man who discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls, a professor wrote back: "I regret to inform you that Muhammad adh-Dhib dwells in the desert and it costs a lot of money to reach him. Furthermore, adh-Dhib neither reads nor writes, not even Arabic. He is a simple Bedouin and has no postal address."

* From Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf: "Dear Kenneth ... It was great hearing from you again."

* From Leo Arnaud, composer of the Olympic Fanfare: "Should you come this way, please drop in for a long visit. You will see a lot of the things I have accumulated in my long career."

* From deposed Bulgarian King Simeon II: "Thank you ever so much for your kind wishes as well as the news about the D-Day celebration in Bedford! I saw some of the festivities in Normandy on TV. Unfortunately, I have too much to do and am kept extremely busy with endless issues concerning Bulgaria, where fortunately things are gradually improving."
