A motor home parked outside a Lexington restaurant Sunday morning caught Trooper Dave Albert's eye. He remembered hearing an FBI bulletin Friday that two suspects might be traveling between South Carolina and Delaware in an RV.
His alertness helped lead to the arrest of a couple whom police have wanted for years, 1st Sgt. Rob Fridley said.
After noticing the RV at a Golden Corral about 6 a.m., Albert confirmed it was the vehicle from the bulletin and called for backup. Police were setting up a roadblock at an intersection near the restaurant when the vehicle started to move.
Police pulled it over without incident, Fridley said.
Inside, police found a kilogram of cocaine worth an estimated $55,000 and 30 grams of methamphetamine worth about $3,000, Fridley said. Officers also found two pistols and a single-shot gun that looked like an ink pen, only five times larger, he said.
Police confiscated $10,000 in cash from the vehicle, Fridley said.
Jerry Jefferson Sexton, 47, and Colleen Sexton, 37, were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, transporting drugs into the state and possession of firearms and narcotics, police said. The couple, believed to be husband and wife, were being held at the Rockbridge County Regional Jail pending a bond hearing today.
Jerry Sexton and an unidentified man arrested by the FBI Sunday in South Carolina are suspects in some homicides in Massachusetts and Virginia, Fridley said.
