The long-awaited addition to the Blacksburg branch library opened last week. Now if only library users could figure out how to reach it.
"People are calling us. They know that the new section is open but they are having a tough time just finding the new parking lot and entrance." said Pamela Cadmus, branch director. "When they drive by they see a big gaping hole with construction working going where our entrance used to be."
The confusion starts with a "No Thru Traffic" sign posted at Miller Street, which runs beside the library. It is closed between Draper Road and Preston Avenue.
One of the best ways to find the library these days is to turn onto Eakin Street off Draper Road or South Main Street, then turn onto Preston Avenue. Preston leads to the library's new parking lot. The entrance to the library is now located opposite of the previous entrance and the parking lot is accessible from Harrell streets and Preston Avenue. Renovations on the old part of the branch, part of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library system, will be completed this summer.
"When they finally find us, people come in with huge smiles, their arms full of the large quantities of books checked out to help the library during our move," Cadmus said. "One family returned 100 books."
The branch was closed for two weeks for renovations. In preparation, the checkout period was extended to seven weeks. Patrons helped with the move by taking large numbers of books home so the library wouldn't have to move so many.
The library has resumed its regular three-week checkout period.
