Designated hitter Josh Herman broke a 5-5 tie with an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to help Virginia Tech to a 6-5 win over James Madison in non-conference baseball action Tuesday in Harrisonburg.
Randy Martin went 2-for-3 with two RBI that capped the Hokies' three-run sixth inning. Kevin Kurilla also had two hits and an RBI for Tech (14-12). Blake Clancey (1-0) picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief.
Kevin Razler went 3-for-5 with an RBI for James Madison (15-14).
In other baseball:
Craig Zaikov shut down Radford for seven innings and Virginia pounded out 12 hits as the Cavaliers defeated the Highlanders 6-1 in Radford.
Zaikov (5-0) scattered six hits, struck out four and allowed one unearned run for the Cavaliers (18-12) before getting help from the bullpen in the eighth inning.
Jamie Booth (2-3) took the loss for Radford (7-17), allowing 10 hits and five earned runs in 52/3 innings.
Andy Parr went 4-for-4 with three RBI and Maven Huffman went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and six stolen bases as Eastern Mennonite (12-9, 7-3 conference) downed Washington and Lee (8-9, 4-4)13-8 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Lexington.
Pat Daly's three-run homer in the first game and Jermaine Fletcher's one-hit pitching in the second game helped Ferrum sweep a doubleheader 6-4 and 5-0 over Bluefield in Ferrum.
Daly's homer came in the bottom of the seventh inning and gave Ferrum (18-3-1) the win. Fletcher went six innings and allowed one hit while striking out five in the second game. Bluefield is 12-11.
ETC. Radford splits softball doubleheader
Melissa Pickel's two-run double broke a scoreless tie in the third inning and propelled Radford to an 8-3 win over Liberty in Radford as the Highlanders split a Big South Conference doubleheader with the Flames. Liberty won the first game 7-2.
The victory in the nightcap snapped a five-game losing streak for Radford (29-19 overall, 5-7 Big South). Chastity Chronick hit a two-run double in the fifth inning as the Highlanders pulled away. Laura Jewett (13-5) picked up the win for Radford. Katie Phillips (11-5) took the loss, but got the win in the first contest.
Radford had 10 hits in the first game but fell as Liberty (29-10, 9-3) came up with all its runs in the fourth inning.
The Virginia Tech softball team downed North Carolina A&T in both games of a non-conference doubleheader at Blacksburg.
Freshman pitcher Heather McKenzie tossed a complete game and picked up her first victory as the Hokies won the first game 9-1. Melissa Sanderson had three RBI for Virginia Tech.
The Hokies (13-13) used a late rally to defeat the Aggies 6-5 in the second game. With Tech down 5-3, Kristi Strang belted a two-run single to tie the score. In the bottom of the seventh, Roanoke native Sarah Hudson walked and advanced to third on a two-base error by North Carolina A&T (3-17) when trying to steal second base. Freshman Christine Trunnell entered the game as a pinch hitter and delivered a sacrifice fly to center to enable Hudson to score.
Averett used big innings to sweep a Dixie Conference doubleheader 6-3 and 11-9 over Ferrum in Ferrum.
The Cougars (7-14, 2-4 conference) scored four runs in the seventh inning to win the first game. Julie Shifflett hit a two-run homer to lead Ferrum (11-11, 2-4).
In the second game, Averett scored eight runs in the sixth inning to put the game away. Roben Sutphin led the Panthers with a three-run homer.
Joe Brockman scored eight goals and added four assists to lead VMI (4-3) to a 20-13 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over Pfeiffer (4-4) at Patchin Field in Lexington.
New River Valley Speedway kicks off its 1996 season Saturday with the Eagle Country PSK/Pizza Den racing card.
Four-time Late Model champion Jeff Agnew will open defense of his title as the Late Model Stocks battle for 100 laps. Limited will compete for 35 laps and Mini Stock and Pure Stock drives will face off for 25 laps. An exhibition truck race also will be held. Double points will be awarded in all divisions.
Gates open at 1:30 p.m., with practice at 3:30. The green flag drops at 8. Admission is $10 for adults, $1 for children 12 and under.
