A Forest man led Lynchburg police on a chase for nearly an hour Monday night before crashing on U.S. 221 near Forest Middle School.
A Lynchburg police officer saw a car leaving a convenience store about 11 p.m. that matched the description of a stolen vehicle. When the officer tried to pull the car over, the driver sped away, heading west on U.S. 460, Watch Commander Jack Lewis of the Lynchburg Police Department said.
The car crossed into Campbell County and then Bedford County, reaching nearly 100 mph, Lewis said. The chase ended when the car ran off the road and hit a sign. The driver and his passenger ran. Police dogs tracked the driver to a utility shed behind a nearby house.
Lewis Arthur Carroll, 20, was arrested without incident, Lewis said. He was charged with grand larceny, possession of cocaine, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving and failing to stop for police.
Police continue to look for the passenger, who has not been identified.
