FERRUM STUDENT DIES WHEN CAR HITS TREE

A Ferrum College student was killed Monday night when his car slammed into a tree after veering off Virginia 40 in Franklin County.

Eric L. Baker, 22, of Woodstock, died at the scene of the wreck, according to Tim Harris of the Virginia State Police.

The accident happened at 10:40 p.m. near Virginia 619.

Two passengers in the car - also Ferrum College students - were injured.

Eric S. Cardwell, 21, was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Harris said. No report was available on his condition and no hometown was given.

Noel S. Roy, 22, of Germany, was treated and released from Franklin Memorial Hospital, Harris said.

Roy said Baker swerved to try to avoid an object in the road, according to Harris.

No one in the car was wearing a seat belt. Harris said he does not think alcohol was a factor.
