ATKINS, Clarence Edward Jr., 69, of 570 Thompson Street, Dayton, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon, April 1, 1996. A son of Mary L. Smith Atkins of Roanoke and the late Clarence E. Atkins Sr., he was born on August 13, 1926, in Bedford County. He attended Tinker Creek School in Roanoke, where he lived until moving to Dayton in 1971. On September 12, 1948, he married the former Betty Shelor, who survives. Mr. Atkins had been previously employed at Lantz Construction Co., and was at present Building Inspector for the Rockingham County School System. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Salem, and a member of the Masonic Lodge, AF & AM No. 195. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Steven Edward Atkins of Dayton; a daughter, Ruth Atkins Sink of Dayton; two grandchildren; one sister, Barbara E. Richards of Roanoke; and six brothers, Thomas H. Atkins of Bridgewater, Claude E. Atkins of Arizona, Bobby L. Atkins of Roanoke, Rev. John W. Atkins of Salem, Paul G. Atkins of Salem, and G. Ronnie Atkins of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home, with Pastor David Brunk officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church Cemetery, Hinton. The members of the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, or at his late residence, 570 Thompson Street, Dayton, at any time.

BOWLES, Harry Neal Sr., 83, of Route 1, Blue Ridge, passed away Sunday, March 31, 1996, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born July 11, 1912, in West Virginia, a son of the late Lovey Gold Bowles and Annie Lee Frith Bowles. He was a retired carpenter, and was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Barber Bowles; two daughters, Laura May Watson, Richmond, Jewel Ann Beir, Glen Allen; two sons, Carl Michael Bowles, Blue Ridge, Harry Neal Bowles Jr., Richmond; two brothers, Belvie Bowles, Rocky Mount, Daniel Bowles, Roanoke; five grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 3, 1996, at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, by Dr. William Vest. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. CAMPBELL, Justus Graybill, 93, of Fairfield, died Monday, April 1, 1996, at his residence. Born in Rockbridge County, April 7, 1902, he was the son of the late Frank L. Campbell and Nellie Robertson Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a retired builder and was a member of Stone Church of the Brethren, Buena Vista. Surviving are his wife, Hazel Matthews Campbell, Fairfield; two sons, Paul A. Campbell, Fairfield, and J. Arnold Campbell, Clear Spring, Md.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 4, 1996, at 11 a.m. from Harrison Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Shumaker officiating. Burial will follow in Fairfield Cemetery, Fairfield. CAREY, James A., 89, of Roanoke, died Friday, March 29, 1996, at his residence. He was a retired employee of Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company. He was a member and past chaplain of Rising Sun #146 FAAYM, Minutemen #1 Lodge & C & P Pioneers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Hazel V. Carey. Mr. Carey is survived by one son, James Broadus Carey; two grandsons, Jerome (Pamela) Carey, Anthony Reamy; two great-grandsons; a devoted and caring sister-in-law, Mrs. Kathleen V. Ross; a special neighbor and friend, Mrs. Rosa Burns, all of Roanoke; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel, with Dr. Kenneth B. Wright officiating. Burial will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

COPELAND, Catherine Elizabeth 25, of Lexington, Va., died April 1, 1996 in The University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. Kate was the daughter of Gary and Jane T. Copeland; granddaughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jerome B. Tankersley. Funeral services will be private and a memorial mass will be held at St. Andrews Church, Roanoke, at a later date.

FOX, Stella Hostetter, 72, of Vinton, passed away Monday, April 1, 1996. Born on August 4, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Elijah and Sadie Hostetter of Roanoke. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Jacob Hostetter. She is survived by one brother, Garland Hostetter of Carolina; three sisters, Juanita Howard of Blackfoot, Idaho, and Gladys Stowers and Romona Fewox of Vinton; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; 11 nephews, and two nieces. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 5, 1996, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, with interment in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. GOFF, Lloyd William, 69, of Route 2, Thaxton, died Monday, April 1, 1996, in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was born in Bedford County on May 6, 1926, a son of the late Lon Goff and Georgia Goff. KUPCHIK, Richard S., 46, of Roanoke, formerly of Parma, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 1996 at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Dolores A. (``Lukach'') Kupchik; his mother, Alyse N. Kupchik; and brother, Craig J. Kupchik; son of the late Stephen Kupchik; and the grandson of the late John and Mary Lisky. Services to be held in Parma, Ohio.

PANNELL, Earl Sidney, 87, of Christiansburg, passed away Sunday, March 31, 1996. He was a life long member of Cambria Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mabel R. Pannell, Christiansburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Ed Dickerson, Pawleys Island, S.C., Peggy and Rick Harman, Roanoke; eight grandchildren, Linda Dickerson, David Dickerson, Susan D. REED, Myer S., of Lacrosse, died Monday, April 1, 1996. He was the retired owner /operator of the former M. S. Reed General Merchandise in Marengo, Va., a member of the Board of Directors of Buggs Island Telephone for 44 years and the Secretary/Treasurer for 18 years, a member of the South Hill Masonic Lodge #297 AF & AM, the Lacrosse Ruritans, the Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors for 12 years, the Board of Directors for Signet Bank for over 33 years, the Sunday School Superintendent for over 30 years at Sardis United Methodist Church, the Lake Country Area Agency on Aging Board and was its first Chairman and Treasurer for six years, a board member of the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society, and a recipient of the Purple Heart during World War II. He is survived by his daughter and LOYAL son-in-law, Betty and Roy Norton, of the home; and a son, Myer S. Reed Jr. PhD., of Roanoke; two sisters, Irene Spratley and Eleanor Woolridge, both of Petersburg; one granddaughter, Janice Hovik of Freeman, S.D.; and five great-grandsons. ROBERTSON, Anne Vaughn, of 122 Manchester Avenue, Danville, died Tuesday morning, April 2, 1996, at her residence. She is survived by her husband, James A. Robertson of the home; a daughter, Anne Lindsey Robertson of Naples, Fla.; a son, James A. Robertson Jr. of Salem; two grandchildren, James A. Robertson III of Salem, and Barbara Ann Robertson of Richmond; a brother, Wilson Vaughn of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Margaret Vaughn Summerell of Gastonia, N.C. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn and the Rev. Paul Johnson.
