SHAFFER, Willie G., 75, of Galax, passed away Monday, April 1, 1996. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence.
SIMMONS, Audra W., died early Tuesday morning, April 2, at Berkshire Nursing Home after a lingering illness. She was born April 28, 1908. Audra was Mrs. Long's assistant during the opening and early days of operation of the Vinton Library. She is survived by her husband, P. E. Simmons; children, Katie Bowles, Mineral, Va., Ed Simmons, Knoxville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Andy Bowles, Mineral, Va., Becky Simmons, Ben Simmons, Dan Simmons, Wa lt Simmons, all of Knoxville. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mountain View Cemetery. The Rev. Jay D. Owens, Pastor of Lynn Haven Baptist Church will officiate. SINK, Ralph Lewis, 78, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, April 1, 1996. Mr. Sink was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church, and w as a retired brakeman for Norfolk & Western Railway, with 35 years service. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Cooper Sink; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Gerald Baldwin, Lancaster, Penn., Hope Sink Hatcher, Roanoke, Rebecca and Charlie Tucker, Smith Mountain Lake, Janet and Brandon Gerber, Clearwater, Fla.; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brothers, Edgar Sink, Jr., Courtney Sink, Howard Sink, all of Roanoke, J. B. Sink, Boones Mill; sister, Violet Wray, Boones Mill; nine nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, Thursday, April 4, 12 noon with Dr. Daniel E. Scott officiating. Interment in Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Disease, Roanoke-Salem Chapter, (ADRDA), P. O. Box 5014, Roanoke, Va. 24012. SPRAKER, Walter Thomas, (``W. T.''), 65, of Parkway Lane, Little River, S.C., died Monday, April 1, 1996, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C., after an illness. He was born April 10, 1930, in Wythe County, a son of the late Harold Clark and Eula Gertrude Williams Spraker. He retired from the Norfolk Southern Railway, Roanoke, after 33 years of service, and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach, and the Friends in Christ Sunday school class. Survivors include his wife, Patsy D. Spraker of Little River; three daughters, Gayle Gallagher of Centreville, Debbie Padgett of Salem, and Sandy Shelton of Bedford; two brothers, Richard Spraker of Salem, and Leo Spraker of Richmond; a sister, Eva Hylton of Salem; and seven grandchildren. The family will receive friends at McMillan-Small Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach, with Dr. Harold Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens. TOWNSEND, Evelyn Dillon, Born June 4, 1909 to Thaddeus and Mary Dillon of Roanoke, passed away Monday, April 1, 1996. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Millard C. Townsend; and sister, Ruth Ira Dillon. Surviving are her loving sister, Helen R. Russell, of Winterpark, Fla.; eight children, Douglas L. Townsend, Chesapeake, Va., Michael D. Townsend, Roanoke, Helen M. Townsend, Roanoke, Mary E. Townsend, Roanoke, Ruth C. Townsend, Camden, Me., Richard C. Townsend, Waldoboro, Me., David C. Townsend, Beaufort, S.C., M. Chandler Townsend, Yellville, Ark.; seventeen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Townsend was a 1928 Phi Beta Kappa Graduate of the College of William and Mary. Prior to her marriage to Mr. Townsend in 1939 she was employed as a Teacher by the Roanoke City School System. Following her marriage she became a very active member of Calvary Baptist Church, involved in many church and Baptist organizations, serving the Roanoke area. She is fondly remembered as a much loved Teacher of the Womens Euzelian Bible Class at Calvary. Mrs. Townsend also gave many years of service to public education through active participation on PTA organizations of Roanoke City and Roanoke County, The State of Virginia and National Counsels. Mrs. Townsend with her husband was an early activists and Pr oponent for the Crippled Childrens Society and Retarded Citizens Associations on a State and National level. She was honored by the Community for her many years of service by her selection as Mother Of The Year for Education in 1959.
The family at this time wishes to express their appreciation for the care given to Mrs. Townsend by the loving Nursing Staff on 2 North at Friendship Manor Convalescent Center over the past two years.
Arrangements are being handled by Oakey's North Chapel, family members will receive friends Wednesday, April 3, 1996 from 7 to 9 p.m. A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 4, 1996 at 11 a.m. at Fair View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests acts of kindness be shared with others in need in memory of our mother, a lifelong active caring resident of The Roanoke Valley.
TURMAN, Daphnia Versey, 72, of Chesapeake, passed away Sunday, March 31, 1996, in a Chesapeake Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Greensville Correll and Inez Irene Graham Thompson. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Ernest Thompson; and two half sisters, Osice Moore and Birtie Huff; and one half brother, Baxter Thompson. Survivors are her husband, McDonald Turman, Chesapeake; three sons, Donald Rodney Turman, Herndon, Gary Lee Turman, Chesapeake, Hal Eugene Turman, Virginia Beach; three sisters, Vivian Goad, Sylvia Cox, Indian Valley, Ivory Dalton, Pulaski; one half sister, Lockie Odell Phillips, Indian Valley; four grandchildren, Alicia Kathleen Turman, Christopher Lee Turman, Amy Kathryn Turman, Elizabeth Duncan Turman; one great-grandson, Randall Allen Turman. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Indian Valley Church of God with the Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. Burial will be in Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery. TYLER, Mae Virginia, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 1996. She was the daughter of the late George R. and Laura V. Filson. She was retired from Henebry Jewelers. She is survived by her husband, Raymond G. Tyler; a sister, Mellie F. Maben, and two special cousins, Elizabeth S. Adkins and Nyle E. Filson. Cryptside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 1996, at Fern Cliff Abbey in Evergreen Burial Park, with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
WALKE, The Rev. Roger Atkinson Jr., 81, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, April 2, 1996 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born September 5, 1914 to the late Roger A. Sr. and Emmeline Condict Walke. He received his education from Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Va., his B A from Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., and he received a M. DIV. at the Theological Seminary of Virginia, Alexandria, Va. He was the headmaster of Virginia Episcopal School, Lynchburg, Va., Rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Blacksburg, and also St. Michaels Church in Milton, Mass. He is survived by his wife, Maryann Walke, Blacksburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger A. Walke III and Mary Price, Silver Spring, Md.; two daughters and son-in-law, Martha M. Walke, Arlington, Va., Diana Walke and Timothy Meehan, Montpelier, Vermont; one stepdaughter, Kelly Harman, Fairfax, Va.; two stepsons, John Harman, Washington, D.C., Phillip Harman, Alexandria, Va.; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Daniel, and Andrew Meehan, and Christopher Walke; one sister, Sally Rogers, Charlottesville, Va. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 4, 1996, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Roderick D. Sinclair officiating.
