GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL SEEKS TO BOOST INTERNET ACCESS

The Southwest Virginia Governor's School is making computer connections throughout its service area.

Pulaski County High School, where the Governor's School is located, has 15 high-speed Internet connections made possible by a project between the Governor's School and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Fort Chiswell High School in Wythe County has three connections, while Giles High School has 75. School officials in Giles County plan to have all their schools connected before the end of April.

John Wenrich, who is overseeing the project at the Governor's School, said the long-distance cost for a high-speed line from the school to Giles is $350 a month, while the cost to Fort Chiswell started at $1,000 and is now down to $530, still too high. He said the recently passed national telecommunications reform law may make telephone companies more competitive in their prices as time goes on.

He said school officials in Bland and Carroll counties have expressed interest in connecting their schools, too.

Pat Duncan, the school's director, told its board Tuesday that she has a goal of bringing all the school systems in the Governor's School service area into the Internet.
