TIMESLAND PLAYERS `NET' STATE AWARDS

Five Timesland athletes have been picked to the Virginia High School Coaches' Association All-State volleyball teams.

Patrick Henry's Rebecca Hogan and Allison Suggs are first-team All-Group AAA choices, William Byrd's Cathy Smith is on the Group AA team and George Wythe's Kim Corwin and Tonya Cregger are on the Group A squad.

Suggs and Hogan led PH to a Group AAA runnerup finish and a 20-3 record. The Patriots lost to Mills Godwin in the championship match.

Smith paced Byrd to the Group AA semifinals, where it lost 15-10, 17-15 to champion Waynesboro.

Corwin and Cregger, the only two Timesland underclassmen on the team, paced George Wythe to the Group A semifinals, where it lost to eventual champion Stuarts Draft 15-8, 15-13. (Complete teams in Scoreboard. B4)

In other sports news:

* Freshman second baseman Randy Martin's two-run single capped a four-run fourth inning for Virginia Tech and sparked the Hokies to a 5-2 win over Old Dominion at English Field in Blacksburg.

Tech pitcher Sean Hummel settled down after giving up two home runs in the top of the second inning, pitching 52/3 shutout innings until giving way to reliever Charlie Gillian with two outs in the eighth. Hummel (4-3) struck out six and walked one. Gillian struck out one batter in the eighth and retired the Monarchs (24-8) in order during the ninth to earn his sixth save for the Hokies (15-12).

Left fielder Matt Griswold led Tech's nine-hit attack, going 4-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

* VMI took advantage of three William and Mary errors to score six unearned runs in the first game and then rode the strength of Chris Cofer's two home runs in the nightcap to sweep the Tribe in a baseball game at Lexington.

Phil Nawrocki allowed three runs on three hits in 51/3 innings to pick up his first collegiate win as the Keydets won the first game 8-4. Drew Haney went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for VMI (10-22).

In the second game, the Keydets scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and put the game out of reach. Jeff Roberts pitched two innings of hitless relief to pick up the win as three VMI pitchers held William and Mary (15-16) to three hits. Cofer went 2-for-4, and Dale Moore finished 2-for-3.

* Radford designated hitter Jim Thomas smacked two home runs during a six-run first inning as the Highlanders whipped Richmond 13-2 in a baseball game at Dedmon Center Park in Radford.

Thomas' two-run shot was the second Radford homer in the first inning. Chris Carr (William Byrd) connected on a two-run blast, his fourth of the season. Thomas later hit a three-run homer in the sixth to ice the victory for the Highlanders (9-17).

Richmond (15-12) managed six hits against six Radford pitchers. Junior Tim Manwiller (3-1) allowed one run on four hits in three innings to pick up the win.

* Former Franklin County standout Riley Hodges went 2-for-2 with a triple, homer and two RBI to lead Ferrum past Lynchburg 10-1 in Ferrum.

Jason Wilson (Laurel Park) went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Panthers (19-3-1). Anthony Smith (3-0) went 51/3 innings and struck out five to get the win. Lynchburg is 8-8-1.

* Keith Wempe had four goals and three assists to lead host Roanoke College past Lynchburg 15-6 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game.

Billy Metz also had four goals for the Maroons (5-2, 2-0). Lynchburg is 1-9, 0-3.

* Anne Windover scored three goals for Old Dominion as the Monarchs downed Virginia Tech 16-8 in a women's lacrosse game at Blacksburg.

Four players scored two goals each for 13th-ranked Old Dominion (3-5). Catherine Augustyn had four goals and two assists for the Hokies (3-5).

* Goalie Brooke Glenn made 22 saves to spark Washington and Lee to a 15-5 victory over Longwood in a women's lacrosse game in Lexington. Glenn's career total of 404 saves makes her the Generals' all-time leader, surpassing Erica Ingersoll's 394.

Erika Snyder scored four goals and assisted on two for W&L (7-2). Longwood is 5-3.
