AT&T Worldnet Services confirmed Wednesday that it would offer its Internet customers access to the CompuServe Information Service at a discount, beginning this summer. The alliance is similar to a deal that AT&T struck with America Online on March 11.
The agreement means AT&T will be able to offer its customers not just a computer connection to the often chaotic Internet, but also an option to tap into organized pools of information and entertainment services assembled by the world's two largest on-line services.
For CompuServe, a unit of H&R Block Inc., the alliance with AT&T is a chance to reach millions of new subscribers. CompuServe, with more than 4.5 million subscribers, is the world's second-largest on-line service behind America Online, which has more than 5.5 million subscribers.
