WOMEN AND VIOLENCE PROGRAM AT E&H

Beverly Birns, who has been researching and writing about domestic violence for 10 years, will speak on "Violence Against Women: Societal Causes, Societal Solutions" at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Van Dyke Center at Emory & Henry College.

Her talk will be preceded by a film, "Dreamworlds: Desire, Sex and Power in Music Video," at 4 p.m. in Wiley Hall. The film raises questions about the dehumanization of women by popular culture, especially rock music videos.

Birns is a developmental psychologist in the State University of New York, where she has taught for 25 years. She is research committee chairwoman for the Suffolk County (N.Y.) Task Force on Family Violence and creator of a course at the university that draws connections between violence against women and the abuse of children.

The film and lecture are in observance of Violence Against Women Awareness Day.
