THE SALVATION ARMY-TURNING POINT ADVISORY COUNCIL'S new officers are Mary Lou Reynolds, chairwoman; Ellen Weinman , vice chairwoman; and Kitty Landis, secretary. Advisory council members are Judy Buck, Linda Craft, Andrea Haley, Tina Rolen and Teresa Woolwine.

THE ARC ROANOKE INC. presented its annual awards for educational excellence to Dennis Bevins of Roanoke schools and Larry Shouse of Roanoke County schools. Both have been instrumental in finding ways to train students with special needs.

ANNE CHURCHILL KIRKPATRICK has had her poem "Second Chance" published in "A Delicate Balance," an anthology published by The National Library of Poetry.

LEWIS-GALE MEDICAL CENTER has awarded the 1995 Employee Humanitarian Award to Venita Jones and the 1995 Volunteer Humanitarian Award to Nancy Archer.

Jones and Archer are eligible to compete for the national 1995 Columbia/HCA Healthcare Humanitarian Awards, the highest honors within the corporation.

THE BLUE RIDGE ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF VIRGINIA has elected officers and board members:

Steven L. Higgs, president; David Trinkle, vice president; Michael Quinn, secretary; and Michael Hatcher, treasurer.

Board members: Higgs, Trinkle, Lee Osborne, Larry Bly, Gerald Carter and Annie Eagan.

DOROTHY HERNDON of Roanoke was honored by Virginia Tech as an outstanding woman graduate at the recent celebration of the 75th anniversary of women at the university.

Herndon also is featured in the book "Generations of Women Leaders," which was distributed at the celebration.

LOA AREA AGENCY ON AGING has elected officers and board members:

Murry White, president; Betty Trumbo, vice president; Calvin Johnson, second vice president; Claudia Whitworth, treasurer; and John Eure, secretary.

Board members: Anthony Conner, Bob Coulter, Janet Nelson, Cecil Addison and Calvin Johnson.

New Advisory Council officers: Elizabeth Bogle, chairwoman; John Sabean, vice chairman; and Ouida Persinger, secretary. Other council members: Robert Gregory, Barbara Burnett, William Castle, Sandra Green, June Poe and Howard Sumpter.

JIM TALIAFERRO , mayor of Salem, recently was named Citizen of the Year by the Salem/Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce .

Taliaferro will step down in June as the city's mayor after 24 years on City Council, 22 1/2 as mayor. The Salem native is president of Salem Contracting Inc.
