Western Virginia's hills and mountains offer many sites from which to view the rising sun Easter morning. Here are some traditional services planned:
Sherwood Memorial Park on East Main Street in Salem will be the site of worship at 7 with the Rev. George Edwards, of Fort Lewis Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the speaker. A community choir will be directed by Twila Briscoe. This service, sponsored by the Salem Ministers Conference, will be held at Salem Wesleyan Church, 424 Chamberlain Lane, if weather is bad.
Churches of Christ and independent Christian churches will sponsor sunrise worship at 6:30 at Edgewood Church, 1006 Peck St. N.W. Preaching will be Derry Gray of Penn Forest Christian Church.
Cedar Lawn Burial Park, Cove Road west of Peters Creek Road, will be the site of the 59th annual sunrise service sponsored by the Roanoke Christian Endeavor Union. Speaker for the 6:30 worship will be the Rev. Larry Eenigenburg of Calvary Memorial Church. Rain site is Westminster Presbyterian Church in America on Peters Creek Road.
Belmont Baptist Church, 825 Stewart Ave. S.E., will sponsor a neighborhood service on its lawn at 7. A breakfast served by Sunday school classes will follow.
Huntington Court United Methodist, Williamson Road at Huntington Boulevard, will join with Grace United Methodist in sponsoring a service on its lawn at 8.
Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 6262 Country Club Road, Troutville, has scheduled its sunrise service at 7 with breakfast following in the fellowship hall.
The lawn of the Allstate building on Virginia 419 will be the site of a neighborhood service at 6:30 sponsored by Oak Grove Church of the Brethren. Breakfast will follow in the nearby church.
Buchanan churches will unite in sponsoring a sunrise service at 7 in Fairview Cemetery with breakfast following at Buchanan Baptist Church. Speaker will be the
Rev. Jim Tinney of Trinity United Methodist.
North Roanoke Lutherans will join for a sunrise service at 6:30 at St. Philip Church, 8115 Williamson Road, Hollins.
Connelly Memorial Baptist Church, 3907 Hershberger Road N.W., plans its service at 6:45 on the lawn or, if weather is bad, inside the church.
