Holy Week services at St. Thomas of Canterbury Anglican Church include a Maundy Thursday service and Holy Eucharist at 7:30 p.m., followed by stripping of the altar; a Mass of the Presanctified and Adoration of the Cross, Friday, 7:30 p.m.; a lighting of the new fire and prophecies, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; and a Celebrebration of the Lord's Resurrection Easter Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
The church is at the corner of Hershberger and Hubert Roads. The Right Rev. William dej. Rutherfoord is rector, and the Rev. Joseph Miller is assistant rector.
BAPTIST
Bonsack Baptist Church, 4845 Cloverdale Road, will present its annual pageant, "He Came ... Seeking," tonight through Sunday at 7 with a Saturday matinee at 2. Free tickets are available by calling the church at 977-5701.
Crystal Spring Baptist, 2411 Rosalind Ave. S.W., plans a cantata, "He Lives," Sunday at 11 a.m. Betty Geiser is director. The Rev. Allen Cumby, interim pastor, will preach.
Spiritual dance will be part of an Easter play, "Challenge of the Cross," Saturday at 7 p.m. at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1415 Eighth St. N.W. The Tuesday Noonday Prayer Band is the sponsor.
Red Hill Baptist Church, U.S. 220 in the Clearbrook community, plans a Maundy Thursday service tonight at 7.
At Maple Street Baptist Church, 902 Fairfax Ave. N.W., the Heavenly Gospel Singers of Phoenix will perform Easter music at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Jerusalem Baptist, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., will have a joint Good Friday service with Morning Star Baptist. The Morning Star pastor, the Rev. L.A. Lewis, will preach. An Easter sunrise service is planned at Jerusalem at 6, with morning worship at 10:45.
CATHOLIC
St. Andrew's Catholic Church, 631 N. Jefferson St., begins the Easter celebration with the Lord's Supper tonight at 7:30. Good Friday liturgies include Stations of the Cross at 3 p.m. and a service at 7:30 p.m. The Easter Vigil and Mass of the Resurrection will begin Saturday at 8 p.m. Easter Sunday Masses will begin at 8 and 10 a.m. and at noon, with a Vietnamese Mass starting at 2 p.m.
Our Lady of Nazareth Church will include a foot-washing ritual in its Eucharist tonight at 7. Good Friday ritual will begin at 7, with Saturday services beginning at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Easter morning Masses will start at 8, 9:30 and 11:30.
DISCIPLES OF CHRIST
First Christian Church, 344 Church Ave. S.W., will show the film "Jesus" tonight at 7 and follow it with a Communion service.
Westhampton Christian Church, a Disciples of Christ congregation at 2515 Grandin Road S.W., will be the site of a Good Friday ecumenical service beginning at 12:10 p.m., with participants from several churches. Call 774-5394 for more information.
EPISCOPAL
Christ Episcopal Church, 1101 Franklin Road S.W., plans a simulated Passover seder tonight, beginning with a meal at 6. Cost will be $4 for adults and $2 for children. Call 343-0159 for reservations. The ritual meal from the Jewish tradition reminds Christians of the Old Testament connection to Jesus' Last Supper. Maundy Thursday Eucharist follows. Good Friday liturgy will begin at noon, and the Great Vigil of Easter service will start Saturday at 8 p.m. Easter Sunday services are scheduled at 7, 9 and 11 a.m., with special choral and bell music at the two later services.
At St. James Episcopal Church , 4515 Delray St. N.W., the ritual of Eucharist and stripping the altar will begin tonight at 7:30, with Good Friday services at 12:15 and 7:30 p.m. followed by Stations of the Cross. Easter Vigil will start Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Easter Sunday services include traditional Eucharist at 8 a.m. and contemporary Eucharist at 10 a.m.

Good Friday liturgy will begin at 7 p.m. with Easter Vigil beginning at 7 Saturday. Easter morning Eucharists start at 8 and 10:30 a.m.
St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Salem has scheduled Maundy Thursday Eucharist tonight at 7:30 with Good Friday liturgy at noon . A quiet retreat led by the Rev. Dr. Melvin Maxey, associate rector, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the church. The Easter Vigil will start Saturday at 7:30. Sunday Communion services will begin at 7:30, 9 and 11 a.m.
GRACE BRETHREN
At Patterson Memorial Church, 5512 Hollins Road, the choir will present an Easter musical, "Written in Red," on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Don Eshelman, pastor, will preach.
LUTHERAN
St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1008 Franklin Road S.W., has scheduled a dramatic reading of the Passion story on Good Friday at 7 p.m. Youth will join adults for the reading. On Easter Sunday, Holy Communion will be celebrated at 7:30 and 10:55 a.m.
St. Paul Lutheran Church, 4909 North Lakes Drive N.W., will hold evening services at 7:30 tonight and on Good Friday and Saturday. The church will serve light breakfast on Easter morning at 9, with Holy Communion beginning at 10 a.m.
St. John Lutheran Church, 4608 Brambleton Ave. S.W., has scheduled Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services at noon and 7:30 p.m. The Saturday night Easter vigil will begin at 9. Services on Easter Sunday start at 8:30 and 11 a.m.
St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 1201 Hardy Road, Vinton, has Maundy Thursday Communion tonight at 7. The Tenebrae, "service of shadows," is scheduled Friday at 7 p.m. On Easter morning, a breakfast at 9:45 will be followed by Communion at 11.
PRESBYTERIAN
Westminster Presbyterian Church in America, 2216 Peters Creek Road N.W., will present a tableau based on the da Vinci painting of the Last Supper on Good Friday at 7:30 p.m. Special music will be part of the presentation. A nursery will be staffed.
Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road S.W., will have a choir presentation of "Service of Darkness" for its Good Friday Tenebrae service, starting at 7:30 p.m.
UNITED METHODIST
Grace United Methodist Church, 4404 Williamson Road, has set Holy Communion for tonight at 7. On Good Friday, the church will be open for meditation at 6 p.m. preceding the service at 7. Easter morning worship will begin at 10:30 a.m.
First United Methodist Church in downtown Salem plans services tonight and on Good Friday at 7:30. Easter morning services will begin at 8:30 and 11 a.m.
Cave Spring United Methodist Church, 4505 Hazel Drive S.W., will add a service for Easter Sunday. Worship with special music is scheduled at 8, 9:15 and 11, with the education period at 9:45.
Two Old Southwest churches, Trinity and Highland Park United Methodist, will join for a potluck dinner and Communion tonight beginning at 6:30 at Highland Park, 624 Ferdinand Ave. S.W.
Calvary United Methodist Church, 845 Hemlock Road, Salem, will present the oratorio "The Crucifixion" by Stainer on Good Friday at 7 p.m. Easter morning service will start at 11.
Bonsack United Methodist Church, 4493 Bonsack Road, has scheduled a family candlelight meal tonight at 6:30 in Layman Hall. For the Communion, which follows, special music and a monologue of Mary, Jesus' mother, is planned. The Good Friday worship at 7:30 p.m. is the Tenebrae "service of shadows." Easter morning worship will begin at 8:30 and 11.
OTHER EASTER EVENTS
A foot-washing ritual tonight and the Tenebrae Good Friday worship, both at 7 p.m., are scheduled at Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, 2138 McVitty Road S.W. The Love Feast, which includes foot washing, is a centuries-old practice in the Church of the Brethren to symbolize humility.
A cantata, "Raise Your Joys and Triumphs High!" will be sung Sunday at the 10:45 a.m. service at Salem Church of Christ, 401 W. Main St. Sylvia Bailey is director.
A crucifixion tableau, a tradition of First Church of God, will be presented tonight and Good Friday at 7 on the lawn at 5008 Hildebrand Road N.W. A simulated Passover meal will begin tonight at 6. The foot-washing ritual will be included in the Communion service. A pageant, "When the Trumpet Sounds," with a da Vinci tableau will begin Saturday night at 7; it was written and directed by Chris Arnold and Kay Rippee. Easter morning events begin at 7 on the lawn, followed by breakfast and worship at 10:45 with special music.
Unity of Roanoke Valley, 3300 Green Ridge Road, will celebrate the Resurrection at 6:45 a.m. on Easter on the church patio. Traditional flower services will start at 9 and 11 a.m. and will be followed by a potluck luncheon.
Parkway Wesleyan Church, 3230 King St. N.E., has scheduled a Night of Praise with Communion service Friday at 7. Other Wesleyan congregations in the Blue Ridge Zone will participate.
An Easter musical, "Arise My Love," will be presented Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. at Valley Word Ministries, 1928 Loch Haven Drive. An offering will be taken.
Richfield Retirement Community, in the Glenvar neighborhood west of Salem, will observe Maundy Thursday with Communion tonight at 7. Good Friday worship will begin at 2 p.m., with the Easter morning service at 11. All events are open to the public as well as staff and residents of the center and will be held in the Jane Morgan Harris Chapel with the chaplain, the Rev. Thomas Clay, officiating.
Joint Holy Week services are in progress tonight through Sunday morning under sponsorship of four congregations. Communion will be offered at tonight's worship at St. Paul United Methodist, 502 Fifth St. N.W. with Williams Memorial Baptist in charge. The Good Friday ritual will be at Slate Hill Baptist, 4354 Elm View Road S.W. with Bethlehem Baptist in charge. On Easter at 6:30 a.m., an outdoor service is planned at Williams Memorial Baptist, 2105 Carroll Ave. N.W. with St. Paul United Methodist in charge. Breakfast follows.
