THE ROANOKE REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE has named Jack Avis of Avis Construction Co. the 1995 Top Producing Backbone Club Member. By contributing more than $6,000 in new memberships during 1995, Avis surpassed his own 1993 and 1994 records.
The chamber also named Ruthie Costello of The Carpet Shops Home Design Center the 1995 Ambassador of the Year for her work as a volunteer and team leader.
ANGELA KINZIE has been named Woman of the Year for 1995-96 by Valley Network Business and Professional Women's Organization. A childbirth educator, Kinzie has been instrumental in providing women the option of family representation during their labor and delivery.
HARRY W. KESSLER III of the Beltone Hearing Aid Center in Roanoke has received the Pacesetter Award, which is presented to the company's hearing instruments specialists who have made significant contributions to the education and well-being of the hearing impaired.
THE ROANOKE VALLEY SOCIETY FOR HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT has announced the names of its members who passed a comprehensive exam and received accreditation from the Human Resources Certification Institute.
Those receiving the senior professional in human resources designation are: Nancy A. Gladden, Ingersoll-Rand Co.; Joe Sgroi, Roanoke Memorial Hospitals; Carolyn Sink, Ingersoll-Rand; and Ann Ward, Manpower Inc.
Those receiving the professional in human resources designation are: Layne Lee, SESCO Management Consultants; Debra Mason, HCMF Corp.; and Beverly Moore, Arkay Packaging Corp.
WALT SCOTT, manager of Oakwood Homes of Roanoke has been recognized as rookie manager of the year by Oakwood Homes Corp., based in Greensboro, N.C. Scott has been with the company since 1992 and has been a member of the Quota Club for three consecutive years.
JOHN RICHARD CRYSEL of Roanoke recently passed the uniform certified public accountant examination for North Carolina. The North Carolina State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners has announced that Crysel was one of 341 candidates to pass the exam in November.
ELMER BLANKENSHIP, an independent truck driver from Buchanan, has received the Hall of Fame Award from Dart Transit Co. in St. Paul, Minn., for seven accident-free years of driving with the company. The National Safety Council awarded Blankenship its Million Mile Safety Award last year for driving more than 1 million miles without an accident.
CHRISTOPHER McDONALD, formerly of Roanoke, has joined the Virginia Department of Transportation's Saluda residency staff. McDonald began his career with VDOT in 1992 as an inspector trainee in the Salem district. He worked part time for VDOT until his 1993 graduation from Virginia Tech, where he earned a degree in civil engineering. He was hired full time by VDOT in 1994.
THE ROANOKE REGIONAL HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION INC. has named Andy Kelderhouse of Fralin & Waldron Inc. Builder of the Year for 1995. He was recognized for his efforts on behalf of the association's members in governmental activities in Richmond and throughout the Roanoke region.
The group also named Jon Williams of American Electric Power Co. Associate of the Year for his support of association activities and his dedication to the home-building industry. The award is given each year to someone who is not a builder but who supports the association's projects.
KATHY L. CREWS-ROBERTSON of Salem has been included in the 1996-97 edition of Who's Who in Executives & Professionals.
THE ROBERT CLAIBORNE AGENCY has received an Award of Excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education for publications it created for Chatham Hall, a private girls' school in Chatham. The publications included alumnae newsletters, the annual giving brochure and the annual report.
SHERRIE FISHER, a sales representative for United States Cellular Corp. in Roanoke, has been awarded membership in the company's President Club for 1995. She was one of the top 40 producers for the Chicago-based company.
CUMMINS ATLANTIC INC. of Roanoke has been recognized by Cummins Engine Co. Inc., a producer of diesel engines based in Columbus, Ind., for its performance in the company's Quest for Excellence program. The program focuses on quality improvement and improving service operations.
ROGER W. BELCHER and DANNY L. CRUFF, both of Roanoke, have been promoted at the Virginia Department of Transportation. Belcher, previously a senior construction inspector in the Salem District, will be a project engineer for Henry and Patrick counties. Cruff, formerly a lead construction inspector in the Salem District, will be a project engineer for Bedford County.
WILLIAM S. MERCER, director of services and co-owner of Professional Therapies of Roanoke, recently was certified as a category II disability evaluator by the National Association of Disability Evaluating Professionals. The association establishes standards for the testing and evaluation of individuals who are being considered for disability coverage.
CONNIE CROSS GUELICH of Guelich Planning Services, a financial services firm in Roanoke, has qualified for Professional Achievement in Continuing Education, a program sponsored by the American Society of CLU & ChFC and The American College, both in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
HENRY B. MONSOUR of Roanoke has been named a Knight of the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation, the philanthropic arm of MDRT. Monsour is with the Roanoke agency of New York Life Insurance Co.
